An Unlikely Newsletter
June 16, 2018
One of the best things about summer is that as a culture we have decided that this is the season of play. It's a time in which it is not only okay, but expected that we take a few minutes out of our day to stretch our toes in the grass, or lay back in a hammock with a glass of lemonade and a spectacularly entertaining book. In short, it's a season of self-care-permission to take the time we need to make us more fulfilled as people.

So in this issue, we're celebrating the wonderful things that make us human. Books that explore relationships are peppered throughout but also stories that celebrate resilience in times of hardship. All the books that fill this issue are recommendations by our booksellers. We hope you will come to the store to explore our picks, and talk to our booksellers to find the perfect summer read for your vacation, the beach, or backyard.

Where ever you spend your reading time this summer, we have you covered. Come by An Unlikely Story and share your thoughts. We can't wait to talk about all our picks!

The Lost Family
The Lost Family
by Jenna Blum
The Lost Family is a saga you won't be able to put down. It begins in WWII where Peter Rashkin experiences a devastating loss, and follows him through his emigrating to New York City, and his becoming a chef and owner of celebrated restaurant Masha's in 1965. The characters are so completely drawn, flawed and real, you feel that you know them. It's the story of a marriage from the beginning, with a husband who can't recover from the scars of loss, and a beautiful wife who is trying to find her way. It's both funny and sad at times, and it will stay in your thoughts long after you read the last page.

Calypso
Calypso
by
David Sedaris
While there are emotional pieces related to the loss of his sister to suicide and his late mother's alcoholism, Sedaris' writing remains acerbic and hilarious and will solicit hearty laughs from any reader. Passages related to the fear of getting a GI bug mid-flight and of curses used by drivers around the world are particular standouts. He's just the best.

Neverworld Wake
by Marisha Pessl
This eccentric thriller is full of poignant pop culture references, existential musings on love and eternity, and a pervasive creepiness that tips you out of reality and into a purgatory of the characters' own creation. Fast paced, thought provoking, sometimes shocking, Neverworld Wake made me want to hold up Gatsby on a party yacht and then dive into the endless deep of a metaphorical ocean. This story is the weirdest fun you can possibly have. (Ages 12+)
