A Weekly Gig Harbor Update
|
|
Greetings!
We're here for you with updates each week covering what's open and local businesses to support and what to do while practicing social distancing.
If you have questions, we urge you to join the Mayor's live Q&A sessions, hosted on the
City of Gig Harbor Facebook page each Tuesday and Friday at 10:00 AM. You do not need a Facebook account to watch, but you will need one to comment or ask questions.
The Mayor is also on KGHP 89.9 FM each Wednesday at 1:00 PM for live updates.
Announced today - Pierce County has moved into Phase Two.
What's open in Phase Two:
- All outdoor recreation that involves less than five people outside your household is allowed (camping and beach time).
- Gatherings with no more than five people outside your household will be permitted.
- Travel is still limited to non-essential travel within the proximity of your home.
- Remaining manufacturing, new construction, in-home and domestic services like nannies and housecleaning can resume.
- In-store retail purchases will be allowed with restrictions.
- Real estate can resume as well as office-based businesses, although telework remains strongly encouraged.
- Hair salons, barbers and nail salons can open.
- Restaurants can open under 50% capacity, with tables that seat no more than five.
Local businesses need to implement the state’s “Safe Start” guidelines before they can re-open, and the Chamber hosts some resources on this topic, along with the state’s guidance at coronavirus.wa.gov.
Read along in good health, and should you have information to add or update, please drop a note to us via the link below.

City Small Businesses Stabilization Grant
|
|
On May 28th, the Gig Harbor City Council passed a resolution authorizing the creation of a Small Business Stabilization Grant program to support local businesses and the economy.
The program is funded with $308,000 from a portion of the City’s CARES Act stimulus package distribution. Each awarded grant will be at least $1,500.

- The business must be a for-profit business. The City provides other avenues of support for non-profits, including lodging tax grants and creative endeavor grants.
- The business had ten or fewer full time equivalent employees (FTE) as of March 1, 2020. To determine the number of FTEs employed, for each employee, enter the average number of hours paid per week, divide by 40, and round the total to the nearest tenth. The maximum for each employee is capped at 1.0.
- The businesses is not owned, or partially owned, by employees or public officials associated with the City of Gig Harbor.

Benefits are available for self-employed workers
Unemployment benefits are now available Washingtonians who have lost work because of the COVID-19 crisis—including freelancers, independent contractors and other self-employed workers. The new federal CARES Act makes this possible.
If you’re a self-employed worker who’s lost income in this crisis (real estate agents, business owners, independent contractors, photographers, freelancers), you may now qualify for unemployment benefits. The amount of financial help varies. But if your application is approved, you will be paid at least the minimum weekly benefit amount, and if that amount is at least $1 per week, you will also receive an additional $600 weekly from March 29 to July 25.
These benefits are also available retroactively to the date of your lost work.
