November 2023 Newsletter

Dear District 2 Neighbors,

As we all get ready for some colder weather and the holiday season, here is a recap of what I did in October. Per usual, we had two City Council meetings last month. I want to say thank you to those who attended to voice their opinions on various issues and I encourage others to do the same. We also held a Council Workshop to select a new commissioner for the Planning Commission. Congratulations to Michael Ogden for being selected as the newest commissioner. I had a great time serving on a panel with other elected officials at Calvary Chapel's Salt & Light Ministry Event, thank you to Calvary Chapel for a warm welcome and a great discussion. The League of California Cities San Diego County Division had a meeting where we heard updates on various legislation that affects local control in our cities.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Oceanside held their annual Night Out Gala at The Seabird Resort. This year was the largest attendance they have ever recorded. Thank you to everyone who joined me for this fundraiser, what a fun night it was! The Chamber of Commerce hosted their Rising Star of the Month awards where we recognized students throughout Oceanside who have succeeded despite significant hardships. The RE:BEACH team conducted a workshop to showcase global solutions for beach sand restoration. This workshop was very successful and created a space for residents to give feedback to the teams before a final decision is made on which plan is right for Oceanside.

Mira Costa College held a Community Leaders Breakfast where we heard from the college’s superintendent/president, Dr. Sunita Cooke, about the District's accomplishments and vision for the future. Our annual Dia De Los Muertos Festival took place downtown, I sincerely appreciated the opportunity to attend and learn more about this important day in Hispanic culture. I was invited to attend a summit hosted by State Senator Catherine Blakespear regarding homelessness. This was a great event where we heard from professionals who have spent years at the forefront of the battle against homelessness.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for The Hacienda Mission San Luis Rey. This brand-new senior living community is located right next door to Mission San Luis Rey and offers luxurious amenities that are sure to impress. Additionally, the Riverview Springs Apartment Community held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate their expansion of six new buildings and 47 new apartment units. The Oceanside Fire Department held an open house to demonstrate the equipment they work with and the training they receive, thank you OFD for a great event. The Oceanside Museum of Art hosted their Rising 2023 Gala fundraiser which was a blast to attend and raised money for a great organization. Lastly, I had the great opportunity to meet with various constituents and stakeholder groups, hearing about the issues they face and how we can improve our city together. Thank you to all who reached out and took the time to meet with me to voice their concerns or solutions.

As we move forward into November, I want to express my gratitude for your continued support and engagement. Together, we can make a difference in District 2. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,

Councilmember Rick Robinson

Local Business Highlight

A recurring section of this newsletter will be dedicated to highlighting local businesses here in Oceanside which we encourage you to support. For the November edition of this newsletter, I would like to recognize San Luis Rey Bakery & Restaurant. This establishment has been serving Oceanside residents since 1958 when it was founded by the Mercado family and it has been in the same location ever since. In 2007, the Mendoza family took over operations. Not only does the bakery make delicious pastries but the restaurant serves incredible Mexican dishes you are sure to love. Stop by today and support a local Oceanside family-owned business. For more information or to see their menu, click here to visit their website.

Community Issues

I receive many calls and emails regarding various issues our residents in Oceanside face every day. I take pride in responding to these issues as fast as I can, whether it be providing information to residents, making city staff aware of things that need attention, or bringing items forward to the City Council for consideration. A new thing I will be doing in this newsletter is sharing updates on issues frequently raised by you, the residents.

1) Tierra Norte Housing Project - I haven't received any complaints or issues regarding this project, however, I want to share some information about it for future reference. A lawsuit that was previously filed has now been settled. Some of the results of this settlement are a reduced number of units, as well as, public access to the river trail. More information on this project, including the boundaries, current progress, amenities, etc. can be found here.

2) Mobile Home Issues - Recently I attended a meeting for the Trico Mobile Home Park. The current owners are looking to sell the property and while they have no buyer yet, a group of concerned park residents is looking into making an offer to purchase the park.
