December Recap

Council Update

We had two City Council meetings last month. Here are some of the highlights from those meetings. We approved a motion to direct staff to prepare the necessary actions to ban all new, non-hosted STRs in all residential districts in the City except for the Residential Tourist Zoning District. We approved Deputy Mayor Keim’s appointments to regional boards and commissions with the change of making myself the primary appointment to the North County Transit District with Councilmember Joyce as alternate. We also approved a motion to direct staff to change the inclusionary housing requirement citywide to 15 percent and approve all other aspects of the previously introduced changes to Chapter 14C. Additionally, we approved the adoption of a resolution setting new slip rental rate fees in the Oceanside Harbor.

Our next Council Meeting will be held on January 10th at 5:00pm.

 Getting out in the Community

I attended several different events throughout the community in the month of December. These include Visit Oceanside's Annual Board Holiday Gathering, the Oceanside Foundation's Holiday Party, the Parade of Lights at the harbor, and the Downtown Tree and Menorah Lighting Ceremonies. I attended the Cal Cities San Diego County Division meeting, I got the opportunity to tour the new Greenbrier Village affordable housing development, I was in attendance for the Economic Development Excellence Awards ceremony, and I had a great time celebrating the retirement and promotion of many within the Oceanside Fire Department at their badge pinning ceremony. I was unable to attend the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony, however my Council Aide attended on my behalf and shared with me how special it was. Finally, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce hosted another great Rising Star Breakfast where we recognized students in Oceanside who excel in school and extracurricular activities despite significant adversity.

O'SIDE DEMYSTIFIED

A new episode of "O'SIDE DEMYSTIFIED" is out now! Check our website to catch the latest episode featuring Lori Boody, Director of the Veterans Association of North County. Visit the link below to watch the full episode or check out previous episodes you may have missed. This is a podcast-like show where I will spend each episode explaining how different parts of the city operate. I plan to interview different guests who serve in various capacities around the city. The goal of this project is to give the viewer a better understanding of how things get done in our city.

Local Business Highlight

A recurring section of this newsletter will be dedicated to highlighting local businesses here in Oceanside which we encourage you to support. For the January edition of this newsletter, I would like to recognize MH Custom Printing. This local business offers many services related to custom printing on clothing, including screen printing, embroidery, graphic design, and more. They are family owned and operated. Earlier this year I had a few shirts embroidered by them and they look incredible! I highly recommend their services. Give them a call today at 760-453-7020 or check out their website for more information.

Youth Workshop: Elements of Theatre

Oceanside Theatre Company will be hosting a workshop for young actors looking to sharpen their skills. This class will explore many elements of theatre including scene study, character development, improvisation, audition and callback techniques, speech, and movement. Actors will gain stage knowledge by working with their fellow actors to ‘tell the story’ using strong beginning, middle and end techniques. This class is for ages 7-16. The cost is $155 for a 4-week workshop. Classes are held on Tuesdays from 4:00-6:00 pm. For more information or to register your child, visit their website here.
