October 2023 Newsletter

Dear District 2 Neighbors,

Things slowed down a bit in September, nevertheless here is a recap of last month. The Veterans Association of North County held a great BBQ which I had the opportunity to attend, I always appreciate the time I get to spend with our Veterans. The Oceanside Police Officer's Association hosted a fundraiser in the form of a corn-hole tournament and I stopped by and to take part in the fun. The North County African American Women's Association hosted their 26th Annual Gentlemen's Gourmet where I participated as a judge. I had a great time tasting food and raising money for the NCAAWA's Scholarship Awards.

Furthermore, the Utilities Commission met last month where we discussed important topics, including the proposed rate increases for water and wastewater. Be on the lookout for more information via mail on these rate increases. The Police and Fire Commission met where we heard updates on recruitment for both departments and accepted state grants which provide funding for traffic safety measures here in Oceanside. The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce hosted the Heroes of Oceanside and Camp Pendleton Luncheon where various first responders and service men & women were recognized for their outstanding performance and heroic actions.

I spent last week up in Sacramento representing our city at the League of California Cities Annual Conference. This three day expo was a great opportunity to hear how other cities have approached similar issues we face here in Oceanside and what solutions worked best. Additionally, it provided a forum to meet other city leaders and advocate for more local control for all California municipalities.

The City Council met twice last month, each meeting had productive discussions and we were able to get a lot done, including the approval of the Year 5 Measure X Spending Plan, the approval to re-adopt the revised 2021-2029 Housing Element, and the adoption of the Marine Debris Reduction Ordinance. Green Oceanside partnered with I Love a Clean San Diego for the 39th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day. This is one of the largest watershed cleanup events of the year and participants gain a great understanding of the importance of keeping our beaches clean.

Lastly, I had a wonderful time at the KOCT Speakeasy Birthday Bash, an annual fundraiser the local non-profit holds to raise money for their operations. This extraordinary celebration was a fun experience for all who attended, thank you to KOCT for a great event.

As we move forward into October, I want to express my gratitude for your continued support and engagement. Together, we can make a difference in District 2. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,

Councilmember Rick Robinson

Community Issues

I receive many calls and emails regarding various issues our residents in Oceanside face every day. I take pride in responding to these issues as fast as I can, whether it be providing information to residents, making city staff aware of things that need attention, or bringing items forward to the City Council for consideration. A new thing I will be doing in this newsletter is sharing updates on issues frequently raised by you, the residents.

1) I'm aware of the needs for improvements regarding Melba Bishop Park fields and lighting, I will be working with City Staff to explore possible solutions.

2) Libby Lake Elementary - Thank you to parents who contacted us regarding concerns with the school as they deal with the increased number of students after the closing of Reynolds Elementary. We commend you for continuing to work with the principal to get these concerns addressed.

3) Migrant Drop Offs - The city is appealing to the county, state, and federal government for additional resources and policy changes to address this issue. Thank you to the various community groups who have dedicated their limited resources to ensure these individuals get to their final destination.
