VETERAN'S NEWSLETTER

My Friend,

It's been a busy few months in Washington, DC, and across our congressional district. From honoring the more than 81,000 POW-MIAs who remain unaccounted for, to protecting our military bases from becoming migrant shelters, to standing with a Korean War veteran who was forced to leave his home, I will always have the backs of our men & women who've served.

Additionally, I joined my colleagues in supporting several pieces of legislation to help our nation's veterans and military, including bills to send more funding to veteran organizations, improving communication from the VA and increasing oversight to help veterans access the quality education they've earned and deserve.

My office will be sending regular updates about the work I'm doing to support our veterans and active duty service members in and around New York City, so please be sure to share this and encourage others in your network to sign up to stay up to date with everything I'm doing for you.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis

I believe "America First" starts with putting our citizens - especially our veterans - over citizens of other countries. I proudly stood with Frank Tammaro, a 95-year-old Korean War Veteran, who among other seniors was forced to leave his home in an assisted living facility to make way for migrants residing in our country illegally. I've requested a copy of the shady and lucrative contract between Homes for the Homeless and New York City to see just how much this non-profit is making from kicking our veterans out of their homes. Click HERE to learn more about my efforts to hold the city accountable for this injustice.

I've also joined a bipartisan group of elected officials on both sides of the bridge in fighting the City, State and Biden Administration's plan to turn our military bases and federal parks into migrant shelter. Fort Wadsworth is a gem cherished by our community, serving as both domicile and an operation base for the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Park Police.

Allowing migrants to be placed on our military installations would not only cause irreparable damage to the sites themselves, but jeopardize the critical national security operations underway to keep our citizens safe. I'm using every legal and legislative tool at my disposal to prevent this plan from coming to fruition, including introducing legislation to prohibit federal funds from being used to facilitate such shelter.

Last month, I joined the Thomas J. Tori Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America on Staten Island to honor the 81,000 POW-MIAs, our fellow Americans who remain unaccounted for from our nation's wars. Click HERE to learn about this solemn event and our commitment to not rest until every soul is brought home.

In recognition and appreciation for his service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, I presented Staten Islander Emanuel Saks his service medals. Our office offers our sincerest gratitude for his bravery and the sacrifice he made for country!

In Brooklyn, I joined veterans and community leaders to support the American Legion of King County's Youth Recreational Facilities 27th Anniversary Banquet. More young people can learn about the sacrifices of our veterans by bringing them together.

BILLS I'M SUPPORTING

Saving Vet Halls Act of 2023: This bill aims to provide funding to help veteran service organizations (e.g. American Legion, AMVETS, Veterans of Foreign Wars) make needed upgrades to their facilities and technology.

PASSED BY THE HOUSE:

H.R. 1530 - Veterans Benefits Improvement Act of 2023: This bill works to improve the VA's disability claims process by updating procedures and enhancing communication with veterans and their representatives.

H.R. 3981 - Isakson-Roe Education Oversight Expansion Act: This bill seeks to rein in these abuses by educational and vocational institutions by increasing VA oversight and restoring benefits to defrauded veterans. It builds on the successes of Isakson-Roe to improve oversight, foster accountability, and most of all, help veterans access the quality education they have earned.
