Dear Hillel Community,

As you may know, Hillel students have been working day and night organizing, advocating, and getting out the vote to stop an antisemitic resolution that was being put to a campus-wide vote.

Yesterday morning, supporters of that resolution sent an email advocating for its passage to the entire University student body, which is a clear violation of election rules. This flagrant violation of election guidelines raised questions about the legitimacy of this election. This morning, the University sent an email to students announcing they have taken the extraordinary step of removing the resolution from the ballot.

In light of the blatant and clear violation of the election rules, we applaud the University for taking this step. While we would have liked to see this resolution defeated outright, it is entirely appropriate to cancel the election. We also look forward to the results of the University’s investigation into this matter.

At the same time, we are disheartened by the divisions these referendums have created on campus. We respect and affirm the rights of all students to advocate for their beliefs without fear of harassment and look forward to working with diverse student populations on campus to strengthen the entire community.

To all the students who worked so hard these past few weeks and days, your hard work was not for naught. You not only educated so many of your fellow Wolverines, but also showed them that the Jewish community at Michigan is proud and standing tall!

Finally, throughout this time, Michigan Hillel’s diverse programming has been moving forward full steam ahead! On Tuesday, more than 60 people came to hear Millet Ben Haim, 27, a survivor of the massacre at the Nova festival speak. On Wednesday we announced the new Governing Board-a group of talented leaders who are stepping up to create a strong Jewish community at Michigan. Shabbat will be a great time to decompress before we head into the final push of the term, and next week Hillel is hosting our popular Finals Study Daze.

As always, thank you for your support. If you have any questions, as always, please reach out.
