Dear Faithful Supporter,
We are writing to share an important update regarding our mission partner, Cherish Watoto Kenya.
After careful review, the Cherish Watoto Board of Directors has taken the step to suspend the Administrative Director Bernard Wandera and Finance Bookkeeper Fanuel Moti, effective immediately, pending an ongoing investigation into serious financial irregularities and potential breach of fiduciary responsibilities. As part of this action, Bernard and Fanuel are prohibited from communicating directly with sponsors or donors.
You are invited to learn more and ask questions after services this Sunday after second services, January 11, during a presentation and conversation led by Board Members Kathy Peart, Jeannine Allen, and Pastor Greg, along with Pastor Tara Beth. Boxed lunches will be available, while supplies last.
Our primary concern, now and always, is the care and well-being of the children and staff at Cherish Watoto. We will discuss in greater detail what life at Cherish Watoto has looked like and some of the hardships the children and staff have faced during the January 11th meeting, but please continue to be in prayer for the staff and children at Cherish Watoto.
We also want to provide clarity regarding church finances. As part of the Forward Generosity Initiative, our church purchased the land adjacent to the existing Cherish Watoto school for future development. We want to clearly state that this land purchase has been successfully completed.
During the January 11 gathering, we will also share how we, as a church community, are discerning next faithful steps in walking with our brothers and sisters in Nairobi. We are pleased to report that highly qualified interim leaders for both the Director and Finance roles have accepted these positions and are already on board at Cherish Watoto, actively implementing critical changes. They bring strong experience, proven integrity, and the expertise needed to establish clear accountability, strengthen systems, and support the effective reopening of schools in this month, laying a more sustainable foundation for the future.
This is a season of rebuilding with wisdom—strengthening foundations, restoring trust, and ensuring that this ministry not only endures, but continues to serve children and families with integrity for generations to come. More than 25 years ago, Cherish Watoto began as a small rescue home in the slums of Nairobi, and we remain committed to participating in God’s mission alongside them for many years ahead.
Even in moments of challenge, God continues to provide a way forward. Thank you for your prayers. Thank you for standing with Cherish Watoto Kenya. Thank you for believing in the children. We remain anchored in faith, committed to integrity, and hopeful for all that God has yet to do.
With gratitude and hope in Christ,
The Cherish Watoto Board of Directors and Senior Pastor Tara Beth Leach
