Dear Community Leaders and Members of Anne Arundel County,

I hope you're staying cool during this extreme heat watch. With temperatures rising to dangerous levels, remember to hydrate, stay in air-conditioned spaces, limit strenuous activity, and check on your neighbors. Anne Arundel County has opened several cooling centers. Find locations and hours at aacounty.org/cool.

Also, effective immediately, curbside collection customers will be asked to place materials at the curbside by 5:00 a.m. on their collection day during June, July, and August. Similarly, contractors will be permitted to begin collections at 5:00 a.m., a switch from their normal start time of 6 a.m. This allows us to comply with Maryland's new Heat Stress Standard. For more information, visit the Bureau of Waste Management Services' Curbside Collections webpage.

You may have seen that we've launched a community survey to gather feedback on how to better educate and empower the public, and how to respond to hate bias incidents and hate crimes in Anne Arundel County. We'd love to hear from you! Your voice and feedback are incredibly valuable to us, so please take a few minutes to complete the survey. It took me less than 10 minutes.

As always, we have other updates below.

Governor Wes Moore joined BGE, its sister utilities Pepco and Delmarva Power, and nonprofit partners from United Way of Central Maryland, the Salvation Army, Harford Community Action Agency, and Shore UP! to launch the companies’ Customer Relief Fund, which will provide a total of $19 million in relief for limited- and middle-income customers in Maryland during an anticipated increase in energy bills. The fund was made possible through a one-time donation by the utilities’ parent company, Exelon, to the nonprofit partners who will administer the funds across the BGE, Pepco, and Delmarva Power service areas in the state. Weekly Letter: A Warning to Protesters, a Unanimous Budget, and a Bad Amendment

Published: June 13, 2025

I must start this week with a warning. Many of us are outraged at the way that ICE is being used by the federal government, and all of us have the right to protest and to record on our phones the work being done by federal agents with our tax dollars. Our local police department does not participate in immigration enforcement activities, and will even protect your safety as you peacefully exercise your rights.
