Anne Arundel County is continuing its investigation into the February 22 cyber incident affecting certain systems within the County’s computer network. While the investigation into the full scope of the incident is still ongoing, there is no continued disruption to County services. Today the county provided notice of an event impacting the confidentiality of information related to certain individuals who received treatment and related services at the Department of Health. The County is working with technical consultants to undertake a comprehensive review to determine the information that may have been present in the potentially impacted files and to whom the information relates. There is no indication at this time that financial information was impacted. The County will directly contact potentially affected individuals identified through the review process. You can read more information about the notice and the incident by visiting aacounty.org/cyber-incident.

Anne Arundel County Government and the Anne Arundel County Department of Health is providing notice of a recent event that may impact the confidentiality of information related to certain individuals who received treatment and related services at the Department of Health.
On February 22, 2025, the county became aware of suspicious activity affecting certain systems within the county’s computer network. The county immediately launched an investigation to confirm the full nature and scope of the activity with the assistance of industry-leading cybersecurity specialists, law enforcement partners, and relevant state agencies.
The ongoing investigation determined that the incident originated externally from a threat actor and was a ransomware attack. Further investigation confirmed that there was unauthorized access to a limited subset of the county’s network between January 28, 2025 and February 22, 2025, and that certain files within the network were accessed or downloaded without authorization during that time.

In this revealing conversation with County Executive Steuart Pittman, Chief Awad opens up about the extraordinary path that led her to law enforcement leadership.
At just nine years old, following her father's departure, Awad became a co-parent to her six siblings, navigating life in economically challenged neighborhoods while watching her mother struggle to provide. This firsthand experience with adversity shaped her understanding of community needs and cultivated leadership skills that would define her career. Two high school teachers recognized her potential, investing in her development and igniting a passion for public service that eventually led her to a 23-year career with Prince George's County Police before taking the helm in Anne Arundel.

Planning for Success and
Confronting Threats
Published: May 9, 2025
We’ve got some stuff to celebrate, and some stuff to fear. My obligation is to share both.
Last Wednesday evening, I moderated an online panel discussion about the county’s Plan2040 Annual Implementation Report that covered progress during 2024.
Sounds dull, I know. But to me, it’s something to celebrate. Our county’s general development plans used to be viewed as nothing more than a big thorn in the side of land speculators and developers. They were ok with plans that promoted smart growth, environmental protection, and equity, as long as they didn't interfere with what they saw as their right to develop land to its “highest and best” or “most profitable” use.
