Dear Community Leaders and Members of Anne Arundel County,
Good afternoon. I hope everyone is doing well and is having a good week so far.
Several of County Executive Pittman’s priorities were approved by the County Council this past Monday with 7-0 bipartisan votes.
First, the Green Infrastructure Master Plan was approved. This plan maps out a path forward toward County Executive Pittman’s goal of making sure that 30% of the county’s landmass is preserved and protected from development by 2030.
Second, same-sex spouses of public safety workers - who selected their pension beneficiaries before same-sex marriage was legal in our state - can now amend their pension selections to allow their spouses to receive the same spousal benefits as other spouses.
Third, the Council signed off on County Executive Pittman’s proposal to reclassify the positions of our 9/11 call-takers, our first, first-responders. This reclassification recognizes the training and the skills that our 9/11 operators have and allows them to be paid more for their work. More competitive pay should help with retention and recruitment for these critical positions.
Fourth, we released funds from the Tax Incremental Finance District in Odenton to begin the construction of a parking garage next to the MARC station. This will be a huge economic driver to the region, and along with the investments we are making in the new Odenton Community Park, and sidewalks in the area is a great example of smart growth and transit-oriented development.
These four measures show that County Executive Pittman is committed to preserving our environment, increasing public safety, furthering equality, and promoting smart growth. We appreciate the County Council’s unanimous support of each of these initiatives.
There’s also a lot more community news in this newsletter, so check it all out!
Sincerely,
James Kitchin
Office of the County Executive
