Dear Community Leaders and Members of Anne Arundel County,
Happy Black History Month! As you find ways to recognize and celebrate the contributions of African Americans to our country, I hope you will consider attending one of our office’s events. First, we have a webinar on February 8th with our Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Director, Pete Hill. He will interview Chanel Johnson, Executive Director of the Banneker-Douglass Museum, about the current exhibit: The Radical Voice of Blackness, Speaks of Resistance and Joy. Then, on February 16th, our office will host the ‘Few of the Many’ awards celebration in partnership with the Caucus of African American Leaders. This event recognizes African American residents in Anne Arundel County who have made lasting contributions to their communities. Details on both events can be found below.
As you may know, I have served in my new role as Director for about three months. It has been amazing speaking with residents across the county and learning what makes each community unique. The Budget Town Halls have been one of the ways I connect with community members. So if you live in District 6, I hope to see you tomorrow at Annapolis High School, where I also happened to graduate, for the District 6 Budget Town Hall. I am excited to hear what residents want to see prioritized in the FY24 budget.
As always, we have great information highlighted below, so please take a look.
Sincerely,
Vincent Moulden
Office of the County Executive
Director, CECS

A Statement From
County Executive Pittman and Police Chief Awad
on the Release of Footage Detailing Tyre Nichols’ Violent Arrest
| |
Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman issued the following statement after the release of footage showing Tyre Nichols’ violent arrest.
“America and Anne Arundel County are weeping tonight, as am I and my wife Erin.
“We saw the worst of humanity in the brutal beating of Tyre Nichols by five Memphis police officers, and we saw the best of humanity in the response of his mother, Mrs. RowVaughn Wells.
“Her love for her son, and his love for her are a heart-wrenching inspiration. Her ability to call for peace amidst the loss, and to commend her police chief and district attorney while condemning the officers’ actions, even while expressing sadness toward them and their families, is an extraordinary example for the rest of us to follow.
“I, and I hope others, will take to heart the words of our Anne Arundel County Chief of Police Amal Awad: “The answer does not exist in division and violence. The answer rests within us all to unite, to wrap our arms around this family, to uplift and support this family, to uplift and support one another, and continue the necessary work to prevent another tragedy.”
“Despite what happened in Memphis I know that in Maryland and in Anne Arundel County, we will make progress. Our communities are engaged, our elected leaders are engaged, our law enforcement agencies are engaged, and this incident will only inspire us to work harder toward peace.”

2023 COVID-19 Benefits Update
The federal government recently announced significant changes that impact the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Medical Assistance programs (MA). The changes will end some benefits and services that were temporarily made available to customers due to the Public Health Emergency (PHE) during the COVID -19 Pandemic.
The federal decision ends SNAP Emergency Allotments and a pandemic-era prohibition on closing active MA cases. Emergency Allotments are extra SNAP benefits provided to eligible households since April 2020. All SNAP households will see a decrease in benefits due to this policy change. Also, the State will start closing MA cases if the recipient is no longer eligible due to changes in household circumstances or fails to renew his or her case.
The specific change in SNAP benefit amount is the result of a recent federal law; therefore, it is not subject to the fair hearing regulations. 7 CFR 271.7(f)
