We write to you today with gratitude for your continued love and prayers for our diocese and for Bishop-elect Paula Clark, and to share an update.
 
You may remember that in July, when Presiding Bishop Michael Curry decided to postpone Paula’s ordination and consecration indefinitely to give her time for rest and recovery, he pledged to meet with her and her team of physicians every three months to assess her readiness to assume the office of Bishop of Chicago. He had hoped to have such a meeting in October.
 
Since then, as you know, Paula’s husband, Andrew McLean, has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma. She is now with him in Washington D.C., making decisions about his care and spending time with him and their family. Although Paula has nevertheless continued her speech therapy during this most difficult time, Andrew’s illness and her time away from Chicago have delayed the Presiding Bishop’s consultation with her medical team at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab here in Chicago. He hopes that she will be able to complete an assessment with her treatment team at Shirley Ryan soon so that he can consult with them and with her by the end of November. The Standing Committee remains in regular conversation with the Presiding Bishop’s office and will share more information when the consultation is completed. Please continue to pray for Paula and Andrew as we await this update.
 
In the meantime, our mission and ministry in the Diocese of Chicago continue. We are writing to you today from the annual clergy conference, the first since the COVID-19 pandemic began. These few days are a brief respite from the busy season of congregational visitations, ordinations, and confirmations that resumed earlier this month—a season that will include the annual Hispanic liturgy and confirmation service at St. James Cathedral on December 4.
 
With the bishop’s staff and leaders from across the diocese, we are also preparing for the 184th annual convention of the diocese on November 20. We look forward to seeing many of you online that day and sharing with you more updates about the ministry of the diocese in these liminal times.

Les escribimos hoy con gratitud por su continuo amor y oraciones por nuestra diócesis y por la Obispo Electa Paula Clark, y para compartir una actualización.
 
Tal vez recuerden que, en julio, cuando el Obispo Presidente Michael Curry decidió posponer la ordenación y consagración de Paula indefinidamente para darle tiempo para descansar y recuperarse, se comprometió a reunirse con ella y su equipo de médicos cada tres meses para evaluar su disposición para asumir el cargo de Obispo de Chicago. Esperaba tener una reunión de ese tipo en octubre.
 
Desde entonces, como saben, el esposo de Paula, Andrew McLean, ha sido diagnosticado con mieloma múltiple. Ahora está con él en Washington D.C., tomando decisiones sobre su cuidado y pasando tiempo con él y su familia. Aunque Paula ha continuado su terapia del habla durante este momento tan difícil, la enfermedad de Andrew y su tiempo fuera de Chicago han retrasado la consulta del Obispo Presidente con su equipo médico en Shirley Ryan AbilityLab aquí en Chicago. El espera que ella pueda completar una evaluación con su equipo de tratamiento en Shirley Ryan pronto para que pueda consultar con ellos y con ella a fines de noviembre. El Comité Permanente permanece en conversación regular con la oficina del Obispo Presidente y compartirá más información cuando se complete la consulta. Por favor, continúen orando por Paula y Andrew mientras esperamos esta actualización.
 
Mientras tanto, nuestra misión y ministerio en la Diócesis de Chicago continúa. Hoy les escribimos desde la conferencia anual del clero, la primera desde que comenzó la pandemia de COVID-19. Estos pocos días son un breve respiro de la ajetreada temporada de visitas congregacionales, ordenaciones y confirmaciones que se reanudaron a principios de este mes, una temporada que incluirá la liturgia hispana anual y el servicio de confirmación en la Catedral de St. James el 4 de diciembre.
 
Con el personal del Obispo y los líderes de toda la Diócesis, también nos estamos preparando para la 184ª convención anual de la Diócesis el 20 de noviembre. Esperamos ver a muchos de ustedes en línea ese día y compartir con ustedes más actualizaciones sobre el ministerio de la Diócesis en estos tiempos liminales.
