An Adult Adoptee's Thoughts about Celebrating National Adoption Month
There is much to celebrate and honor in National Adoption Month, and the voices and feelings of adult adoptees are one of those things. For this week's Coalition Connection , we asked a member of our staff who is also an adoptee if she would share her thoughts about National Adoption Month Celebrations.

"As an adoptee, I can say that I personally never knew about National Adoption Month until I started working in the adoption field. I have always celebrated my adoption on the day it was finalized; it was like having a second birthday. My family ate cake, I opened presents, and we celebrated the day I legally became a part of the family. Because I grew up in a transracial adoptive family, I have always known that I was adopted; but, for me, I think I identify as so many other things before identifying as an adoptee, that I don’t always take time to celebrate my adoption outside of that one day a year.

"I also know that, for some, it is hard to celebrate their adoption. Every adoption story means something different for each adoptee. While some may have hoped and prayed for a forever family, others are grieving the loss of a first family. Then there are those who, like me, have simply always had adoption as a part of who they are.
"National Adoption Month can trigger or bring to the surface a number of emotions--especially for those who have not yet come to terms with their adoption story and are still trying to cope with their trauma. It is a time to recognize and remember everyone in the adoption constellation--the adoptee, yes, but also the birth families that are grieving a loss of a child who is no longer with them, and the adoptive family that is celebrating how their family has grown.

"During National Adoption Month, I encourage you to be mindful about everyone in the adoption constellation. Take time out to check in with an adoptee you may know, and let them know you are here to support them wherever they are in their journey. Reach out to a birth family and let them know you are thinking of them. Join in the celebration of an adoptive family. Encourage all of these individuals to share their stories with you, be open to helping them grieve and cope, or respect their wish to not want to celebrate at all. If there are others around you who don't know a lot about adoption, you could share some resources or information about the topic.

"As you recognize, celebrate, and honor those in your life who have been touched by adoption, remember, too, that someone just may need a little extra love and support this National Adoption Month. Your kindness and understanding will go a long way!"
