Catching Up With Chuck Still
A voice from the past landed in my inbox last week. Arts Blast reader Chuck Still, former executive director at Riverside Theatre in Vero Beach, emails from time to time to catch me up with where he is and what he’s up to. After leaving Vero Beach, he spent time as the founding executive director of The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, before heading west to Houston. He left his five-year gig at the Midtown Arts and Theater Center in Houston, Texas, last fall and let the call of the road grab him for a few months. He traveled the country, seeing more than thirty states and the District of Columbia by truck, picking some olives along the way before getting back in harness. He’s now executive director at the Community Arts Center in Williamsport, Penna.

He said,“I took this job because it really came down to doing shows. I got into this business because I enjoy doing shows, and it was attractive to me to program. It was also attractive to me to just have a theater again.” And a beauty it is. The inside of the CAC is reminiscent of an old theater in his hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee. The CAC was saved from the wrecking ball by dedicated residents 25 years ago. Still said, “It may be bigger than it should be in a town this size, but Williamsport had the heart to save it, and I would like to see it become the heart of Williamsport.”

Still's new local newspaper, the Sun Gazette has a nice feature story on Chuck here.
Emmet Cahill 's
Back in Florida

You don’t have to be Irish to fall for Emmet Cahill’s delivery of Celtic favorites. He made a serious impression on Space Coast Symphony Orchestra audiences when Maestro Aaron Collins introduced him several years ago. Cahill will be back in Florida this month but this time he’ll be traveling with the Emerald String Quartet. He took a bit of time to answer some questions for Arts Blast readers.

Cahill is 29 now, still listing his residence as Mullingar, Ireland, and still lists his family, in addition to his parents, as “One Brother, One Sister, 1 Dog, 2 Cats, 6 hens, and God knows what else appears at the doorstep.” As a youngster, Cahill was surrounded by music, with his dad a piano teacher and local church organist. “Our house was like a music school most of the week with students coming and going,” he said.

Some readers might know Cahill as a member of Celtic Thunder. He joined them in 2011, after missing an audition in Dublin the year before and just making it to Belfast at the last minute for that audition. Cahill went out on his own later but continues to tour with Celtic Thunder, and will be on the road with them sometime this year. “I always wanted to tell my own story as a performer and felt I had a lot to give,” he said.
“I also felt there were so many Irish songs and stories that I could bring to new audiences, as well as my many loyal fans from the Celtic Thunder fan base.”

Cahill’s parents joined him Florida for his SCSO concert and will be on this tour along with an aunt and uncle. “They love Florida, and enjoy meeting the audiences at my shows - so be sure to say hello folks! Their Irish accents are pretty distinctive!”
He’ll be touring again in April and May, he said, but then “will take the summer to focus more on my opera studies and maybe squeeze in a vacation. I then tour again in the fall before joining Celtic Thunder for a tour at the end of the year. ”I performed 60 solo shows throughout America and Canada. I get home in between touring, and it's great as we live in the country. Aside from that, I spend time in New York studying with an opera voice teacher, which has been bringing great improvements to my singing.”

The best part of a tour for Cahill is meeting people “at the shows and getting to hear about their love of the music, as well as hearing some amazing life stories. Music has give me so much, and the thing I value the most s the people music has brought in to my life. I have made very dear friends during my time on tour throughout the states.”

The worst part? “It's tough being away from family and friends, but I count myself very lucky to be able to do what I love every single day, and make a real difference to peoples lives through music.”

Cahill’s music is available on Spotify and YouTube. Look for Emmet Cahill’s Ireland now and a new Irish album later in the year.

Lunceford and Craig Together Again

Lance Lunceford and Dr. Jacob Craig will present Back to Baroque on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at 4:00pm. The concert, features music for trombone, piano, and organ from the 17 th  and 18 th  century arranged for trombone and keyboards. These skilled musicians will combine to perform the music of Bach and Handel, as well as lesser known staples of the Baroque Period from composers like Telemann and Boismortier. A “Question an Answer” session with Dr. Craig and Mr. Lunceford will take place during a fifteen-minute intermission.
Lunceford is a student at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School where he studies finance, management, and macroeconomics. His passion for music has allowed him to become a nationally recognized trombonist and he continues to refine his craft through Penn’s Music Department under the tutelage of Dr. Michael Ketner in the Marion Anderson Performance Program. Lance was the Principal Trombonist for the All-National Concert Band (2017) and has performed as a part of the Florida All-State Symphonic Orchestra (2018), Florida All-State Symphonic Band (2017), and Florida All-State Concert Orchestra (2016). He is currently the Principal Trombonist of the Penn Symphony Orchestra and serves as a student conductor for the ensemble under Maestro Thomas Hong. A proud native of Vero Beach, Lance was a two-time winner of the Vero Beach High School Concerto Competition and led the VBHS Fighting Indians Band as one of its Executive Officers.
Craig and Russian virtuoso pianist Sergey Belyavsky will perform together in a piano concert at First Presbyterian Church, 520 Royal Palm Boulevard, Vero Beach March 29, 4 p.m.  This concert will feature both four-hand and solo performances.

David Jahn, BSEE,MDiv, isn’t your run-of-the-mill pastor. He brings everything he is to his calling and puts it all out there, wherever he is. Jahn is senior pastor at Advent Lutheran Church in Brevard County, a church with one congregation and two locations. Jahn chose to relocate to the Space Coast eleven years ago because he has family here. His mother, daughter and son-in-law were members of Advent Lutheran Church, making moving to Florida from Detroit an easy decision. In Suntree, where he can be found, and in Melbourne Beach, where Pastor Rick Funk leads the flock, the congregations find several “distinctly different spirit-filled worship experiences.

“I try not to be what people stereotypically expect a pastor to be. Rather, I try to be who I am, but following the calling of a pastor. Because of that my congregations tend to have strong music, strong preaching, strong teaching, less conflict (I strongly believe we need to treat each other as Christ would have us treat each other and I don't tolerate tantrums that ignore who we are as followers of Jesus) and some activities surrounding electric cars and motorcycles.”

You read that right. Jahn conducts a Blessing of the Bikes service. “It is a real joy of mine to pray with my fellow bikers and offer them a blessing and a reaffirming of the truth that God loves them and is with them as they ride. We try and offer this blessing around Daytona Bike Week every year.” I’m not sure where the electric cars fit in.

Jahn hasn’t always stood behind the pulpit to spread his message. “I spent 8 years touring with a couple of Christian rock bands with the music ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. Loved it! My wife and I have always been professional musicians and, as I followed the call to be a pastor, this passion came with us.” Advent has incredible musical talent in both the traditional and rock-band based worship leadership, he said.

For the Lenten season, soup’s on at 5:30 Wednesday evenings before the 6 p.m. study of “what it means to be part of a Christian faith community.” At 7:30 Wednesdays, Jahn said, “we gather at Fiesta Azteca with church and non-church folks for ‘The Big Questions’, a no-holds-barred discussion of the gnarly issues of the faith (or whatever else people need to discuss).”

Sundays during Lent, the action is at the Melbourne Beach location, 1805 Oak St. At 5 p.m., everyone meets in Fellowship Hall for pulled pork, coleslaw, and traditional fixings
before moving into the church sanctuary for a worship service featuring Non-Fiction, a blues band led by Jahn, a bass guitar player. ”Gospel blues and BBQ is a Lenten liturgy with a twist with tasty food, great music, and introspective prayers and readings,” said Pastor Rick Funk.

Jahn said he wrote the Gospel/Blues liturgy “to use at a homeless shelter in Columbus, Ohio that required the men to worship before dinner. When I first began helping there I noticed they mostly slept through a worship service that was not at all attempting to meet them where they lived. Once we began doing the Gospel/Blues liturgy they were engaged and participating, hopefully also hearing the good news!”

More information about Gospel Blues & BBQ is available on the church website at AdventBrevard.org or by calling (321) 727-1724.
