Maine Lakes staff and board, with the generous support of our members and volunteers, are working hard to both recover threatened lakes in our state and keep clean lakes healthy into the future. Some of our recent projects include:

LakeSmart: LakesSmart is our flagship program that engages teams of volunteers across the state to visit community members, assessing properties and rewarding those that protect our lakes with best erosion-control practices. The Loon Restoration Project: This five-year effort engages volunteers to increase loon productivity by floating artificial loon rafts, training teams of “loon rangers” and distributing Fish Lead Free supplies.

Policy and Advocacy: We work in both Augusta and Washington, DC on common sense, science-based policies that protects Maine’s lakes. Our work includes crafting policy to protect human safety, water quality, wildlife habitat and shorelines from large wakes; restoration of federal funding to support healthy lakes; and improved boater safety education. Freshwater Education: We are thrilled to be organizing the first gathering of Maine’s Freshwater Education Collaborative this fall, bringing together educators from diverse settings to help craft a plan for more watershed education in our schools and communities.
