One of the many wonderful things about new team members is seeing what we already know to be true through fresh eyes
I completely get it. We learn more every day about the challenges so many in our community face, challenges that most of us can't even fathom. It can be very emotional. We also learn more every day about the work being done to help overcome those challenges, some by faith-based organizations, like the ones introduced below, and some by those that are completely secular. Seeing that work triggers an entirely different emotion. One of the skill sets required, by the way, for working at Cobb Community Foundation is being comfortable seeing your colleagues cry. You can't see what we see and not be moved. Just kidding... about the required skill set, that is. You really can't see what we see and not be moved.
While Shelly is visiting nonprofits, Dana Floyd is working her way through stacks of scholarship applications ('tis the season!). A couple days ago, I noticed as she was staring at her computer screen that the tears were just on the verge of spilling over. These applications will do that to you. The stories are so inspiring, and it is so humbling to be able to work with donors who want to make sure that students who want to go to college or technical school aren't held back solely because of money.
We are so honored to work with companies like La Parrilla Mexican Restaurants, Repro Products and Color Spot, PointeNorth and Strategic Health Partners who all have created scholarship funds for employees and employee dependents, and organizations like Atlanta Country Club and Marietta Country Club that have done the same.
Every day we connect donors who care with causes that matter. Let us connect you!

Welcome Saving Susan Fund

Mission trips, whether local or abroad, provide a way for caring individuals to make a difference in the lives of people in need and can be transformational to both the helpers and those being helped. That’s what happened in 2013 to Jay Arntzen.
On a church mission trip to Cambodia visiting a home for orphaned children, Jay discovered an affinity for the children, and especially a child called Vichika. Jetlagged and overwhelmed by the challenge of the new language, Jay called her Susan in their early interactions. It was easy to be inspired by the lively spirit of these children and he felt compelled to do more. Upon return to Cobb County, he and his wife Tracy began praying about the calling he received to provide the support of a family for the children. They learned quickly that Cambodia’s borders were closed to adoption, so they would need to find another way. ... Read More

BUILDING RESOURCES FOR THE FUTURE
|
|
When students are diagnosed with Dyslexia, parents must make decisions on how to best help them to be successful learners. The idea for GRACEPOINT School in Marietta was developed in 2012 by two moms who were deeply committed to providing a better option for their own dyslexic kids. With very few options available, and none within reasonable driving distance of their homes, they came up with a “big crazy dream.” They decided to create a school in Cobb County specializing in educating dyslexic learners.
Their Christian faith was an integral part of their journey putting together all the building blocks for the new school and was the inspiration for the name GRACEPOINT. The first semester, they opened with only 4 students. Today, they have 134 students and welcome families from all faith traditions. ... Read More

Welcome Family Promise Fund
|
|
When a family with children unexpectedly falls into homelessness, it creates a snowball effect of negative consequences that makes recovering without help extremely difficult. The leadership at Family Promise National understands the obstacles these families are facing, and they have worked for the last 35 years on a program assembling the resources to assist families with children experiencing homelessness to get back on their feet. They have built a strong program that relies on the help of our community with over 200 affiliates in the nation.
Family Promise of Cobb County opened its doors in 2014 with the Family Promise Rotational Shelter Program. Each year programs have been added to meet the growing demand for services. The Rotational Shelter Program (RSP) provides .. . Read More

BOILING DOWN THE ALPHABET SOUP: WHAT ACTUALLY ARE RMDs AND HOW DO THEY RELATE TO QCDs?
|
|
If you get cross-eyed when you start reading about Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) and Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs), you are not alone! And, given the December 2022 passage of SECURE 2.0 legislation, changes to RMD rules are especially important to understand if you are involved in charitable giving and have reached the age of 70 1/2.
What is an RMD in the first place?
A little history may help here. RMDs date back to 1974 when the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) was enacted to .... Read More
