Steps to Success

When Inner Work Leads to Outer Change: Congratulations!

Eight months ago, Resident 23 arrived at The Grove carrying more than a backpack—he carried disappointment, determination, and the quiet fear that comes from realizing stability can slip away faster than expected. Like so many young adults, he had been working and doing his best to build a life. But when his “regular job” proved insufficient to afford a one‑bedroom apartment, and tensions at home escalated beyond repair, he found himself suddenly without a place to live. Believing he could manage on his own, his anger took more control. Eventually, he was kicked out of his parents’ home and began living on the streets—moving from one youth center to another while continuing to work. It was a humbling and eye‑opening experience that challenged everything he thought he knew about homelessness.

Resident 23 soon discovered a powerful truth: homelessness does not always look the way society expects it to. He was not struggling with substance use. He did not have a criminal record. He was employed. And yet, there he was—living the same reality as so many others who had fallen between the cracks. As he later shared, the realization that “it really can happen to anyone” hit him deeply.

During one visit to a youth center, staff encouraged him—again and again—to call 2‑1‑1. Eventually, he did. Through that call, he learned about The Grove and dared to hope for something more: stability, support, and the chance to build a better future. After months of waiting, that hope was answered. The call came—he had been accepted into The Grove.

From the moment he arrived, Resident 23 committed himself to growth. He credits The Grove staff and counseling services with helping him address anger, build healthier coping skills, and envision a more stable career path. Over the course of his eight‑month stay, he achieved milestones that once felt out of reach. He secured a new job, completed training, and proudly became a Direct Support Professional (DSP)—a career he finds both meaningful and fulfilling.

Perhaps most importantly, he continues to work on strengthening his self‑esteem and confidence, carrying forward the lessons he has learned. Today, Resident 23 has completed the Ready to Rent Program, and is preparing for his next chapter. In just days, he will move into his very own apartment—keys already in hand.

First Step Communities is incredibly proud of Resident 23 for his perseverance, his willingness to do the hard work, and his commitment to creating a brighter future. His journey is a powerful reminder that with the right support, compassion, and opportunity, transformation is possible. The sky truly is the limit for this young man, and we look forward to witnessing his continued growth in the years ahead.

From Survival to Belonging: A Young Resident's Journey

Six months ago, Resident G3 walked through the doors of First Step Communities emotionally carrying a lifetime of hardship and quiet resilience. Today, his transformation stands as a powerful reminder of what can happen when compassion, consistency, and courage come together. We could not be more proud of the remarkable strides this young man has taken toward building a brighter, more secure future. Growing up in foster care, Resident G3 often felt invisible—never quite fitting in, never fully belonging. At school and beyond, he felt sidelined and overlooked, carrying the heavy weight of neglect, abuse, and isolation. In his search for connection, he gravitated toward unhealthy relationships and behaviors simply to feel accepted. When he aged out of the foster care system, he found himself without a safety net, and soon, without a home. Life on the streets was unforgiving. Each day brought uncertainty, and the constant struggle for survival took a toll on his mental and emotional well‑being. He encountered people he believed were friends, only to be betrayed—losing what few resources he had and, at times, being left to shoulder the blame in difficult legal situations. The cycle led him into deep depression and further isolation.

Then came a turning point. One day, while praying and daring to imagine a better life, Resident G3 made a choice—to be open to change. That moment of openness led him to the Exodus Project, whose staff listened to his story and immediately stepped in with guidance and support. Through their encouragement, he contacted 2‑1‑1, and after a two‑month wait, he received the call that changed everything: a spot had opened at First Step Communities. Having endured years of disappointment and betrayal, trust did not come easily. But through the radical hospitality, patience, and consistency of the First Step Communities team, something shifted. Slowly, hope began to return. He describes it as a “crack of sunlight” breaking through—a small but meaningful step toward believing again.

Through months of counseling, case management, and supportive community activities, Resident G3 came to a realization that was profoundly healing: he was safe. He had found a place he could temporarily call home—something he hadn’t truly felt in years. With that sense of safety, he began to embrace growth wholeheartedly.

Today, Resident G3 is almost unrecognizable from the young man who first arrived. He now proudly refers to himself as “the voice of the people,” offering encouragement to others and reminding them to stay hopeful. He smiles freely, engages with his peers, and even overcame his fear of public speaking to share his story at a local Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. He is working, thriving, and preparing to move into his own apartment in the near future.

When reflecting on his journey, Resident G3 shared what he would tell his younger self—or anyone currently experiencing homelessness:

“Stay positive and believe in yourself. Even when others may not believe in you, or people come and go…continue to believe in yourself.”

He is deeply grateful for the changes he has experienced since coming to First Step Communities, and so are we. Resident G3’s story is one of resilience, bravery, and renewal—and it is just the beginning. We are proud to cheer him on every step of the way.

Congratulations, Resident G3. Your future is bright, and we can’t wait to see where it leads.

Spotlight Moments

A Picture Perfect Day at The Grove

Saturday, March 21, 2026 was nothing short of magical at The Grove. What began as a simple idea—making residents feel seen, celebrated, and confident—turned into an unforgettable Photo Day filled with laughter, transformation, and pure joy. We reached out asking for a little help, and once again, our volunteers truly delivered.

Our goal was to create a special experience just for our residents: a day where they could shop the donated clothing closet, use donated personal‑care products, receive fresh haircuts and styles, and enjoy professional photos—completely free of charge. These photos are theirs to keep and use however they choose, whether for LinkedIn profiles, job applications, social media, or sharing proudly with friends and family.

And judging by the smiles, the confidence, and the excitement in the air, the day exceeded every expectation.

The celebration began with breakfast burritos and fresh fruit generously provided by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints, Rocklin Stake. Over breakfast, games, laughter, and meaningful conversations filled the space. The group also brought heartfelt, hand‑written inspirational cards, beautifully decorated pillowcases, and thoughtfully prepared goodie bags stocked with hygiene items and towels for each resident. It was the perfect way to kick off a truly special day.

After a short break, it was time for hair styling and photos. Some residents approached with a bit of hesitation, unsure of what to expect, while others were eager to jump in. But once the first few transformations were complete—and smiles and excitement began to spread—more and more residents lined up with anticipation, ready for their moment.

STYLIST:

Professional stylist Marina (@Hair_visionist on Instagram) worked absolute magic. From men’s haircuts to women’s styles, Marina transformed look after look with incredible speed, precision, and care. The confidence she helped create was undeniable. We are deeply grateful to Marina for donating her time, talent, and heart—every resident who participated absolutely loved their new look.

PHOTOPGRPHER:

Equally amazing was professional photographer Michelle Nicholson of Michelle Nicholson Photography. With expert lighting, flattering angles, and a calming presence, Michelle brought out genuine smiles and confidence in every resident. Watching her capture so many high‑quality professional photos in such a short time was inspiring, and the results speak for themselves. Residents were thrilled—many even saying they were “obsessed” with their photos.

CONCLUSION:

By the end of the day, it was clear this experience had created more than just pictures—it restored confidence, created laughter, and reminded each resident of their worth. The enthusiasm was contagious, and residents have already asked when the next Photo Day will be.

Some of the quotes we heard throughout the day say it all:

  • “You guys set this up just for us?!… Thank you.”
  • “This is so much fun—let’s make this a regular thing!”
  • “This feels like a movie.”
  • “Wow… I look good!”
  • “It’s been so long since I’ve seen myself in a professional picture, I forgot what I really look like.”

We’re happy to say this is just the beginning. Plans are underway to bring Photo Day to our other sites as well.

Stay tuned—more smiles, confidence, and picture‑perfect moments are on the way.

Behind the Effort

Roseville Road Campus- Growth and Momentum

First Step Communities’ Roseville Road campus continues to be a place of remarkable growth, momentum, and hope. In 2026 alone, the site has already celebrated 16 powerful success stories—each one representing a resident who completed their program and moved into permanent housing of their own. These are more than milestones; they are life‑changing moments where stability replaces uncertainty and a new chapter begins. Every set of keys handed over reflects courage, commitment, and the real possibility of lasting change.

Behind these successes is a deeply dedicated staff who lead with compassion, consistency, and an unwavering belief in the people they serve. Day after day, team members invest their time, energy, and hearts into supporting residents—meeting them where they are, encouraging growth, and helping them navigate the path toward independence. Their commitment to relationship‑based care helps foster trust, confidence, and the skills residents need to thrive long after they leave the campus.

In partnership with the City of Sacramento, First Step Communities remains focused on expanding opportunity and deepening impact. Together, we continue exploring innovative ways to grow, refine our programs, and stay on this exponential path of transformation—ensuring more individuals are supported on their journey out of homelessness and into permanent, stable housing. The momentum at the Roseville Road campus is a powerful reminder that with collaboration, compassion, and vision, lives truly can be transformed.

Partnering for Impact

Thank You Volunteers!

Lightstreet Collective, Inc- Lunch & Clothing- North A. Street - Thank You

Last weekend, our North A Street campus was filled with warmth, generosity, and genuine connection as Lightstreet Collective joined us for a special day of service. Their volunteers arrived with arms full of donated clothing and freshly prepared lunches, all offered with open hearts and bright smiles. It was a meaningful reminder of how powerful it can be when community members step forward simply because they care.

Volunteers from Lightstreet Collective shared that their motivation was simple—they wanted to make a difference. Throughout the day, their joy in serving was unmistakable as they helped distribute clothing, shared meals, and took time to connect with residents. Adopt a Cabin 2026 continuing!

There's still time! We've received cabin sponsorships, but there are still cabins left! Please consider adopting a cabin, sharing with friends and family, and encouraging others to give- maybe even contribute toward a cabin and "Adopt a Cabin" with your friends! This will make a lifetime difference for a transitional aged youth.

This is our third year of Adopt a Cabin, and it has grown in ways we never imagined. Because of our adopters, these cabins have become homes where young people can begin again. Over the past two years, 217 young adults moved into permanent housing.

This year, more young adults will step into these cabins. By adopting a cabin, you directly impact the life of someone staying at The Grove.

We'd like to give a SPECIAL THANKS to those of you (and your businesses) who have sponsored cabins already!
