My friend...

Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during a busy few weeks in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn...
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL
I promised to go to Washington and fight for our Coasties, which is why I was pleased to see the bipartisan Don Young Coast Guard Authorization pass the House that includes $1.2 million for USCG New York to make critical construction repairs to its Ft. Wadsworth station.

By authorizing funding for these critical infrastructure projects and resources, our Coasties will be able to better serve the New York City community, keep our maritime commerce moving, conduct more search and rescue missions, and protect our national security at sea.
For working-class families who lack public transportation options, they rely upon cars to get to work, drive their children to school, or transport family members to doctors’ appointments or grocery shopping. That's why I've called on Governor Hochul and the New York State Legislature to suspend the state gas tax and President Biden to ramp up domestic energy production to reduce the financial burden on American taxpayers.
Yesterday I questioned CDC Director Rochelle Walensky about New York City's double standard when it comes to vaccine mandates and the federal government's failure to address fraud occurring in COVID-19 relief programs.
IN THE DISTRICT
I'm happy to announce that my office was able to safely evacuate a Staten Island man and his wife from Ukraine following Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion. The man's wife, a Ukrainian citizen, had applied for a spousal visa with the U.S. State Department over one year ago, however, the State Department never processed her request.

After my office intervened, the State Department transferred the wife's visa request to the U.S. Embassy in Moldova. In Moldova, the wife received her visa, and I'm pleased to report they arrived safely back in the United States after weeks of travel and uncertainty.
I'm proud to say that in this year's federal budget, I was able to secure more than $11.2 million for local organizations including the NYPD, RUMC, SIUH, Coney Island Hospital, St. George Theatre and more, to purchase new equipment and make necessary upgrades to their facilities.
I joined local veterans groups in speaking out against the Biden Administration's proposed closure and consolidation of two VA Medical Centers in New York City.

Our VA Medical Centers provide specialized treatments and services that our veterans rely on, need, and quite frankly, deserve. If President Biden is serious about expanding health care access to our nation's veterans, I fully expect this proposal to be dead on arrival if it gets to his desk.
IN THE NEWS
Malliotakis Op-Ed: Replacing Rikers with Jails in Brooklyn, Other Boroughs a Bad Move
For too long the New York City Council has ignored the needs of those that keep us safe. As a public servant, I’ve spoken with our law enforcement on the streets and our corrections officers who keep dangerous criminals behind bars about staffing shortages, subsequent back-to-back 12-hour shifts, and dangerous environments for both guards and inmates on Rikers Island. To deny any of this is to ignore countless news stories, and even worse, the testimonies of those that serve our communities as corrections officers themselves.
Malliotakis Urges Local Nonprofits to Apply for FEMA Security Grant Program
With hate crimes and attacks against places of worship on the rise in New York City, it's critically important for local organizations to take steps to protect themselves and their property. I encourage local nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and community centers to participate in the FY 2022 Nonprofit Security Grant Program Technical Assistance Webinar on Friday, April 1, 2022, at 3:00 PM, to learn more about the competitive grant program, priorities, eligibility, and application process.
