My friend,
As the government shutdown nears one month, I’ve been calling on Senate Democrats to support the same funding levels they previously voted for. I supported this funding to keep our government open and ensure critical programs continued without interruption. This unnecessary shutdown, as I wrote in my recent op-ed, has already delayed $1.4 billion in funding for New York’s safety-net hospitals, put SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans at risk, forced more than 13,000 air traffic controllers and hundreds of thousands of other federal workers to work without pay, and caused small businesses in New York to lose roughly $40 million in loans each week. Fortunately, President Trump was able to shift excess funding from other programs so our military troops got paid and women with children received the food supplements through the WIC program, but these are just Band-Aids — and the money has run out. Senate Democrats need to stop playing these political games and do their part to reopen the government to avoid unnecessary pain on Americans.
While Senate Democrats have gridlocked Washington, I’ve continued focusing on delivering results for our community. Here's a quick update on what I've been working on during this past month across Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn...

JOINED VETERANS AT STATEN ISLAND'S
US COAST GUARD-SECTOR NEW YORK & BROOKLYN'S US ARMY GARRISON-FORT HAMILTON
| | I joined New York City veterans at Brooklyn’s U.S. Army Garrison–Fort Hamilton and Staten Island’s U.S. Coast Guard–Sector New York to call on Democratic members of the U.S. Senate, including New York’s own Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, to pass a clean continuing resolution that will reopen the federal government, ensure servicemembers receive their paychecks on time, and end the unnecessary pain this shutdown is inflicting on families, small businesses, and the economy. | | VISITED STATEN ISLAND'S ACT CARE FOUNDATION | | I visited Staten Island’s ACT Care Foundation to highlight the importance of the Senate ending this shutdown to prevent a lapse in SNAP that could impact 42 million Americans. | |
RESTORING NYPD COUNTERTERRORISM FUNDING | |
The Department of Homeland Security was close to cutting $187 million from the NYPD’s counterterrorism initiatives after it reconfigured its grant formula in a way that would have redistributed the funds to other police departments in the country. This was unacceptable. New York remains the nation’s top terror target and the brave men and women of the NYPD who serve our city with honor need these funds for intelligence gathering, bomb squad operations, surveillance cameras, officer training, and specialized equipment. Upon learning about the cuts, I spoke directly with President Trump, and within 48 hours, he intervened and this critical funding was fully restored.
I’ll never stop fighting to protect New Yorkers and make sure our law enforcement has the resources they need to keep our city safe. I will always have the back of our law enforcement.

STOPPED BY FORT WADSWORTH TO THANK
US PARK POLICE OFFICERS
| | | | I stopped by Fort Wadsworth to thank our US Park Police officers for their continued service protecting our National Parks and community — even during the government shutdown. This year, I reintroduced bipartisan legislation that aligns these officers with those of other federal law enforcement agencies to improve recruitment, retention and addresses the ongoing staffing shortage. | | LED NEW YORK DELEGATION LETTER TO GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL | | I joined members of the New York delegation and sent a letter urging Governor Kathy Hochul to call on New York’s U.S. Senators, Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, to support a clean continuing resolution that would prevent any lapse in funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Starting November 1, without action to reopen the government, 2.9 million New Yorkers who rely on SNAP benefits and 440,000 WIC recipients could face disruptions in assistance if Senate Democrats continue to block passage of the bipartisan funding bill. | | | KEEPING OUR NATIONAL PARKS CLEAN | | I’ve been monitoring our National Parks to make sure they’re clean and well-maintained throughout the shutdown. To help keep them that way, our office along with the Natural Resources Protective Association organized a cleanup at Gateway. | | | Our district is proud to represent the largest community of Italian-Americans in the country. I enjoyed spending time with Councilman Frank Morano & constituents at the Italian Festival at Mount Loretto, and the annual Columbus Day Parade along Bensonhurst’s 18th Avenue! | | HONORING HEROES AT FDNY & NATIONAL FALLEN FIREFIGHTERS MEMORIAL | | Our office attended the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation/FDNY Memorial, which took place on Staten Island this year. We join our grateful city and nation in honoring FDNY firefighters who lost their lives to 9/11-related illnesses. We will never forget their courage and sacrifice. | | Rep. Nicole Malliotakis joined CNN News Central warning of SNAP benefits interruption if Senate Democrats continue shutdown shenanigans. | | | Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis joined Errol Lewis on New York 1's “Inside City Hall” to discuss the latest on the government shutdown. | | | In my recent op-ed, I called on Senate Democrats to immediately reopen the government. I outlined how the Schumer Shutdown—caused by Senate Democrats—blocked the same bipartisan funding bill Democrats supported earlier this year and how it is hurting millions of families, small businesses, servicemembers, and veterans across the nation. | | |
