My friend,

Here's a quick update on what I've been working on in Washington, DC, Staten Island and Southern Brooklyn...
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE HILL
This month I introduced the Right to Remain Safe Act, legislation that aims to place pressure on mayors across the United States to fully fund their law enforcement agencies and give residents recourse should they or their property be harmed as a result of the government's negligence.

Unfortunately, our city has chosen to cut police funding by one-sixth. As politicians strip critical resources and tools from our men and women in blue, our officers become less safe while crime and homelessness on our streets skyrocket, causing a decreased quality of life and a mass exodus of people from our state.
I also put forward an amendment that clearly states Congress condemns calls to defund, dismantle and abolish our police. This should not be a partisan issue, but sadly the vote fell along party lines with every Republican voting for it and every Democrat voting against it.

I also spoke out against Speaker Pelosi's H.R.1, legislation passed that shamefully uses taxpayer money to fund political campaigns with a $6 match for every $1 raised. Any normal person would call this a form of embezzlement. Tax dollars should be used to maintain transportation & infrastructure projects, fund our schools and keep the public safe - not line campaign coffers. H.R.1 also bans states from having voter ID laws, allows ballot harvesting and same-day voter registration with no time for proper vetting.

I've heard from small businesses all across the district that are still struggling to keep their doors open because of the city and state's arbitrary guidelines and closure mandates. Many of these businesses are still filling out their loan applications, struggling to navigate the difficulties of the SBA system while also working to keep their expenses in check.

That's why I introduced legislation extending the PPP application deadline from March 31, 2021, to June 30, 2021, to help small businesses in need of financial relief because of government inaction. Thankfully, Congress voted to do just that!
I also introduced the Prosecuting Gun Crimes Saves Lives Act, legislation that increases investigations and prosecutions of convicted felons, fugitives of justice and individuals who lie or forge information in an attempt to illegally purchase firearms.

Of the approximately 25.6 million people in 2017 who sought to purchase a firearm from a licensed dealer and were processed through NICS, 12,710 cases were referred to ATF Field Divisions for further investigation where only 0.09% were actually prosecuted.

My bill aims to give the feds more teeth to enforce laws that ensure those who attempt to skirt the system by lying and providing false information to purchase a firearm are held accountable.
IN THE DISTRICT
I stopped by the Brooklyn VA Medical Center to check on how vaccine distribution and administration is going. They've now doubled the number of doses administered per day and have expanded their eligibility to include veterans of all ages. To make an appointment, call (877) 877-9267.

I also partnered with Costco and Angelina's Ristorante to secure a pop-up COVID-19 vaccine clinic on the South Shore, which up until now has been underserved compared to other parts of the Island. We appreciate Angelina's hosting this event that brought 360 Johnson & Johnson vaccines to eligible Staten Islanders. We hope this pop-up site is one of many as we continue to work to expand vaccine distribution in our community through the federal retail pharmacy partnership.
Eastern Shipbuilding Group in Panama City, Florida, invited me to tour their manufacturing facility, christen the third and final Staten Island Ferry in the Ollis-class, as well as tour the construction of the new class of U.S. Coast Guard cutters.

As the only member representing New York City on the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure and the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, it was very insightful to see the shipbuilding company that has built the latest class of Staten Island Ferries and FDNY boats that have made their way in and around my district, along with the new class of U.S. Coast Guard cutters that will modernize our Coast Guard's fleet.

Under the Jones Act, Eastern Shipbuilding Group manufactures all of their vessels, including the three Ollis-class Staten Island Ferries, in the United States. The ferries are commercial vessels manufactured in compliance with Buy American materials.

My office will begin accepting applicants for the 2021 Congressional Art Competition. The competition is open to all high school students in New York's 11th Congressional District.

The first-place winner’s artwork will be on display in the U.S. Capitol and will have the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C. for the Exhibition Opening Celebration of their artwork. The second-place winner's artwork will hang in my Washington, D.C. office for one year. The third and fourth place winners' artwork will be displayed in the Staten Island and Brooklyn district offices for one year.

Staten Island Ferry: Malliotakis christens new Dorothy Day boat in Florida
The third of three new Staten Island Ferry boats has been officially christened and launched into the water for the first time.
On Friday, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/South Brooklyn) was invited to visit Eastern Shipbuilding Group in Panama City, Florida, where the new boats are being constructed.
Republicans urge Garland to probe COVID-19 deaths in New York group homes
New York GOP Reps. Claudia Tenney, Elise StefanikLee Zeldin, Chris Jacobs and Nicole Malliotakis sent a letter to the Justice Department arguing that “New York State’s Policies placed those with intellectual or developmental disabilities at increased risk of exposure to COVID, and we fear COVID-related deaths in group homes have been underreported.”
As Biden faces migrant surge at Mexico border, Malliotakis says president’s policies ‘lack compassion’
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island/Brooklyn) said in an appearance on Fox News Sunday that she believes the president’s policies lack compassion for law enforcement, taxpaying citizens and migrants.

“What you’re seeing is the Biden administration undoing President Trump’s policies that clearly worked in stemming the tide of illegal immigration,” Malliotakis said. “And his policy -- President Biden’s policy -- is very lacking of compassion...because they’re encouraging the migrants to take perilous journeys...and the president has incentivized that.”
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, others make themselves loud and clear as they implore mayor to allow youth hockey teams to play
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis wasn’t alone in her thinking when she asked a simple question during a press conference at the Staten Island Skating Pavilion (SISP) in Charleston on Monday evening: Why is it OK for the venue to host 200 people (at 50 percent) free skating on a Friday night, but not for 12 youth hockey players to compete on the same ice in game competition?
