An update from the Finance Committee

As many of you know, the Finance Committee is one of three Vestry-appointed advisory committees created to review and direct specific subject areas within our church. In my role as Finance Chair, I wanted to provide a quick window into some of the committee’s recent actions to further professionalize our growing community, and ensure we are the best possible stewards of our resources and financial health.

Already this year, the committee has closely reviewed our books, and made recommendations to the Vestry that would consolidate restricted accounts in a way that would better direct resources where they are most needed, as well as leverage the church's long-held endowments while protecting their value overall.

But I (as a former PwC partner) am perhaps most excited about this year’s financial statement audit. For years, we were audited by sole practitioners - generally retired CPAs - and while they of course understand accounting and did point out a few issues for improvement, there are much more comprehensive models out there. Christ Church has grown into a solidly program-sized church, and as we continue to professionalize our governance and oversight, we owe it to our whole community to seek that stronger model. As such, we retained a small business that many other EDOW parishes use, and they are close to wrapping up our 2023 audit. Our issues include: some of our capital property and other assets have not been recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP); the cemetery isn’t on our books at all, even though we own it; and we are lacking documented operating procedures and internal controls over budgeting, funds coming in, and funds going out. Though they can sound off-putting, I am thankful to receive these professional recommendations so that we can continue to improve upon the financial care and oversight of our shared community.

As we head into stewardship season later this month, I am especially proud of the work the committee has done and will continue to do to ensure the gifts you share are protected and make the largest possible impact, and that the financial resiliency of our church continues well into the future.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly with questions or feedback.

Kick-off Sunday next week!

Don't miss the start of our program year at the Kick-Off Sunday celebration next week! Not only will there be an ice cream cart, cake, and back-to-(Sunday)-school photos, we will also welcome our new members! Don't miss our celebration at 10 a.m., where we will also wish our dear Deacon Martha safe travels as she returns to Kansas.

20s/30s Happy Hour!

It's been a few months since we gathered for Happy Hour, so please join us on Wednesday, September 11, from 5:30-7pm at Mr. Henry's! Come have a drink and a bite of food on us, and spend time getting to know some of the other young adults at our church. Please let Rev. Winnie know if you can attend!

Kiddos have too many wiggles?

We love having a church full of people of all ages. The sounds of children’s laughter, the pitter-patter of feet up the aisle, and, yes, even the occasional mid-service meltdown are signs of a healthy church!

Occasionally the noises coming from our youngest members can become distracting to other worshipers (and to their own parents). In those moments, we encourage parents to do what they need to! Here are a few suggestions:

  • Stretch your legs in the Narthex (church entryway.)
  • Take your little one to the Library, (just off the right side door of the church) where a speaker plays the service, so you won’t miss a word!
  • The nursery is available every Sunday from 8:45am - 12:15pm for babies through toddlers age 3. Professional caregivers, toys, and books make this a great option for young children so that parents can be fully present in the service!
  • We encourage those with youngsters to sit towards the front of the sanctuary, closer to “the action.” There is a lot to observe, and engaging with what's going on at the altar is a great way to start teaching children about our faith from a young age.

Expanded Small Group Programming!

Beginning this fall, a number of small groups will meet monthly through the program year. Some will be formed around certain affinities or commonalities and others will be more general. The goal of all of these groups is for people to get to know one another better and enjoy time engaging in conversation about their lives and spirituality. Please complete this form by September 15 if you're interested in joining one of our groups!

Become a Member!

Our next New Member Welcome will take place next week on Kick-Off Sunday (September 8). If you are ready to make your relationship with us official, simply fill out this form (and then send us a brief bio!) You can read more about how we view membership here (spoiler: if you consider yourself a member, we do too, but making it official in our books helps more accurately represent our community to the larger Episcopal Church. Either way, join us on September 8 to feel our warm welcome!

Attention Singers!

The Christ Church Choir begins its singing season right after Labor Day, and all are welcome! It's a great way to share your musical gifts with your church. We rehearse Wednesdays from 7:30 - 9:15 p.m., warm-up Sundays at 10:15 a.m., and sing at the 11:00 a.m. service. In addition to learning wonderful sacred music, there is an unmistakable element of fellowship with monthly post-rehearsal celebrations of birthdays and other life events. Please consider joining us. Let us know you're coming or get more information by emailing Music Director Richard Thibadeau.

Keep that water coming through Labor Day!

Shirley's Place continues to fly through their water and drink supplies. Just a few weeks left to add a flat of water to your grocery list so we can keep our neighbors safe and hydrated. Thank you!

Sermon Spotlight

What does it mean for Christ to abide in us, and we in him? Hear Rev. Winnie describe the meaning and power behind the Spirit's transformation of bread and wine, and all it can do to help us show up better in the world.

remind us of our central mission - to help as many people as possible find a deeper relationship with God - and how setting aside our differences every Sunday to focus on all we have in common can help us do just that.

Past sermons are always on our website.
