Emily Owen
Focus Area during THO Fellowship: Middle East and North Africa Region
Emily Owen is currently a student at Georgetown's School of Foreign Service pursuing a master's degree in Global Human Development. She returned to the United States this year after seven years teaching in international schools in Turkey and Egypt, respectively. Starting out as an EFL coordinator for elementary students, after two years she moved into secondary education implementing the International Baccalaureate curriculum for the Diploma Program in Cairo and Istanbul. While living in Istanbul, she also volunteered for Small Projects Istanbul teaching Syrian refugee children. Her experience volunteering with vulnerable populations prompted Emily to leave the classroom setting to pursue a career focused on the intersection of education and conflict/post conflict situations with a special focus on the MENA region and Turkey.
Emily is from Cedar Falls, Iowa where she graduated cum laude from the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor's in Applied Linguistics and is a licensed K-12 English Language Specialist. Her primary area of interest is the MENA region and she speaks French proficiently, in addition to studying Arabic and Turkish.

Turkish furniture sector aims to create a global brand
|
As Turkey and the U.S. announces a target of $100 billion bilateral trade volume, the furniture sector becomes global as it declares to open showrooms in the United States and also in Dubai. This will help the business in Turkey flourish its economy by exporting the country’s furniture. Koray Caliskan the head of the shareholder of the country’s oldest furniture showroom Modoko says that Turkey aims to reach $10 billion worth export by 2023.

According to Turkey’s state news agency, Anadolu, U.S. is increasing its military presence in Syria’s northeast Al-Hasaka province. Agency sources emphasize that the US has begun expanding its bases amid growing tensions.

US perspective on the Eastern Mediterranean and Libya

Everyone more or less predicted the possible outcome of the Libya summit held last week in Berlin. With putschist Gen. Khalifa Haftar fleeing without signing the cease-fire agreement in Russia, his insincerity was confirmed once again in the meeting in Berlin that involved 11 countries and lasted four hours since a formal cease-fire could not be agreed upon.

NATO marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day

At NATO headquarters on Monday, NATO Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Geoana remembers the Holocaust as the most terrifying experience in the history. The event that was hosted by the Italian delegation also unveiled an art called “Dandelions” by Carla Chiusano, dedicated to the memory of those who perished in the Holocaust.

Hundreds of Thousands Flee Syrian Land to the Turkish Border
|
An attack by the Syrian force backed by Russian airpower lead to the death of at least 21 civilians. Thousands of people are fleeing the northern Syrian land to the Turkish border for safety. Syrian people are unsure of what they would do if the bombing continues.

“Defender Europe 2020” Kicks Off

Historical Military drill to take place in Europe with an overall 37,000 soldiers from 18 countries participating in the drill. This drill will take place in Germany, Poland, Georgia, and the Baltic States. It is supposed to be the third-largest military exercise in the continent since the cold war, according to Lt. Gen.
