Dear AITF Members:
This tenth anniversary year has been very eventful so far, as we are at the midway point in 2019. Here are a few recent developments:
- In May, we held our first domestic Local Strategic Dialogue, hosted by the University of San Diego. Our Dialogues are designed to convene roughly 20 to 30 partners in a particular geographic area to help anchor institutions develop unprecedented collaboration to address a priority issue facing their local community. This Dialogue, hosted by the University's President James Harris in collaboration with USD's Karen and Tom Mulvaney Center and the Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate, addressed affordable housing, particularly moderate-income housing, termed, the “missing middle”. The outcome of the discussion was to build collective interest among local anchor institutions in San Diego to contribute to a Missing Middle Fund, which can encourage developers to build housing that is affordable to middle income workers, who are often the majority of employees at anchor institutions.
- Earlier this month, we continued our collaboration with the Council of Europe when we co-convened a meeting of about 30 European leaders regarding the Local Mission of Higher Education at the Council of Europe’s headquarters in Strasbourg, France on June 18-19. This meeting underlined the importance of seeking to establish more organized European cooperation on this topic. The major next step from this conversation is to establish a task force including representatives of the Council of Europe, AITF, and representatives of organizations such as the International Association of Universities and the European University Association, and possibly a few universities to develop a concrete proposal on the objectives, priorities, and organization of such cooperation. AITF will be a source of advice and assistance as this effort progresses.
We look forward to our conference and other exciting developments described below during the remainder of this momentous year.
Best Regards,
David
