3 Promises for Mother's Day
Mother's Day at church can be complicated. Families are messy, church is messy, and Mother's Day often brings these elements together in unexpected ways.
This week, we had a visit from old friends—a family we used to spend time with in the 90s who were passing through town. The father reminded me of something I said at their baby's funeral years ago: "The first face he saw when he opened his eyes was the face of Jesus." I probably borrowed that line; it's a bit too eloquent for me. But this conversation reminded me of the complex emotions that Mother's Day surfaces—particularly for the walking wounded mothers who silently suffer through this celebration.
