Turkey on my leg
Planning our Thanksgiving dinner, I pondered whether to get a frozen turkey or a fresh turkey, a whole turkey or turkey breast, a breast with the bone in or boneless.  As my mind raced with the possibilities, it pulled up a "turkey" memory from early childhood.  My brain is so cluttered that somehow this memory got filed with my thanksgiving preparations!

I smiled ruefully as I remembered this traumatic event years ago.  My mom had volunteered to take several of the children in our neighborhood to our first-grade open house.  Our station wagon was packed with my friends eagerly anticipating meeting their teacher for the first time.  I was dressed in a little dress, ruffled white socks, and black and white saddle oxfords.

However, while I sat in the car, I realized that the big abrasion on my left shin looked exactly like a turkey.  I was devastated and completely distraught.  There was no way I could go into the school to meet my teacher with a turkey on my leg!  Which is exactly what I told my mother.

Mom pleaded.  She tried in vain to convince me otherwise.  But I was too ashamed to be seen for the first time at my school with a turkey on my leg.  Crying, I begged my mom to let me stay in the car.  I was surprised when mom conceded and allowed me to stay.  Looking back, she probably needed to help the other children from the car to their classrooms.  Sitting in the car, I cried because I was not able to meet my teacher...but even the disappointment of missing out on this could not outweigh the horrible shame of having a turkey on my leg.
Sometimes we do the same thing with God.  Ashamed of past sin and the places in life where we have failed Him, we flee from His Presence or lock those shameful secrets deep inside of us, buried in darkness.  But what may look like a horrible turkey from our perspective is a glorious opportunity for redemption when we seek His face and forgiveness.  He longs to shine His light of healing grace on our buried wounds and restore us to wholeness.

Nothing can separate you from God's love...not your past, nor your present, nor anything in your future.  He loves you unconditionally...just as you are.  He longs for you to come to Him and experience fullness of life.  Don't let anything, even a turkey, keep you from experiencing the love He longs to lavish on you!

Father God, thank You for loving us with an unfailing love.  In Psalm 139, we are reminded that there is no where we can go to escape Your Presence.  Father, thank You that wherever I go and whatever I do, You are there.  You are my peace, my joy, my strength and my comfort!  My heart is full of thanksgiving as I meditate on Your character and Your goodness.  I know nothing can separate me from Your love that is in Christ Jesus, my Lord!
