Lately, hummingbirds have been very active around my feeder. I so enjoy watching my "fairy birds" dart and hover with amazing agility and speed. Soon, they will leave our area as they begin their migration to warmer climes. Now they are feeding intensely in an attempt to gain weight and fat for their journey. Ornithologists have calculated that a hummingbird can fly 600 miles without having to re-fuel. A female hummingbird may put on 25-40% more weight before she begins this journey, while a smaller male may double its weight.
In amusement, I have watched the territorial behavior hummingbirds display at my feeder. The feeder has four feeding ports. A hummingbird will hover at the port feeding vigorously until another bird attempts to feed at another port. Immediately, the feeding bird leaves to chase the intruder away. Sometimes, after winning the skirmish, the conquering bird returns to perch on the feeder, daring other challengers as it claims the prized feeder for its very own.
