An Acorn Up My Nose
Some of life's most valuable lessons can be learned early in life.  During a kindergarten show-and-tell, I had one such experience.  A fellow classmate had brought to school a small paper sack filled with acorns.  As the bulging bag was passed around our large circle, my teacher allowed each of us to take out an acorn to examine and keep.

I eagerly awaited my turn to pluck an acorn from the sack.  While I impatiently squirmed in my seat, I noticed that several of my friends were furtively playing with their acorns in fascinating ways.  Some put their acorns in their mouth or in their ear, but I was especially intrigued when I saw one boy put an acorn up his nose.  I couldn't wait to try this feat with my own acorn!

As soon as I got my acorn, I immediately shoved it up my nose... where it stayed, despite the valiant efforts of my distraught teacher.  I had plenty of time to ponder my pitiful plight as I waited for my mom to take me to the doctor for an acorn extraction.  I realized that just because others were doing it, it did not necessarily mean that it was a good thing to do or the right thing to do.
This lesson has been reinforced many times throughout my life.  Unfortunately for this slow learner, a few of these subsequent lessons have been just as humiliating.  Take it from a slow learner and avoid an acorn up your nose or other mortifying experiences.  If you want to know if something is good for you or right for you, don't look to man.  Look to God's Word and His ways.

Proverbs 14:12 teaches us, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death."  Instead, let us choose God's ways which give us life!

Lord God, enable us to choose Your righteous ways that lead to life.  Give us the strength to avoid conforming to sinful ways that are contrary to Your will, even when our culture declares that there is nothing wrong with these thoughts, beliefs or actions.  Let us be known as women of wisdom, daughters of the Most High God.  In the Name of Jesus, we pray.
