Sin Sniffer
This morning I read a fascinating article about a new way to detect COVID-19...dogs!  Dogs have already proven their ability to sniff out diseases that include cancer and malaria.  Scientists think that dogs are discerning the metabolic compounds that our bodies produce when we are sick. 

With 220 million scent receptors, versus the 5 million receptors that humans have, dogs have a sense of smell that's 10,000 times more accurate than our own.  They can sniff substances that are diluted to a point of just one part per trillion!  That's the equivalent of smelling one drop of liquid in the combined volume of 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools! 
The Helsinki Airport will use a team of dogs to screen passengers-no nasal swabs needed as the dogs can detect COVID-19 almost instantaneously.  An asymptomatic person may not even be aware that he has been infected with COVID-19 but due to its superior sense of smell, the dog will be able to sniff it out!  As I pondered these amazing facts, I thought, "I need a sin sniffer!" 

Sin is a disease far more deadly than COVID-19 and has eternal consequences.  And yet, there are times when we are unaware of an area of selfishness, pride or arrogance.  Traces of sin in our lives grow as an offense we have taken becomes resentment and progresses to bitterness.  Things that seem to be harmless pleasures infect our souls becoming idols as we seek comfort and relief in them instead of in God.  How quickly sin can infect us and our relationships with God and others!

We need a sin sniffer!  Someone who can discern the motives of our hearts and free us from self-deception and rationalization.  The Holy Spirit is our sin sniffer, correcting wrong thoughts and attitudes and making us aware of our motives.  And more!!!

The Holy Spirit gives us the power to want to change and gives us the ability to repent...to turn away from sin and towards God, to desire God's ways instead of our own.  Then, the Holy Spirit teaches us and counsels us, showing us how to live a life that pleases God.

What a Sin Sniffer!  What a Savior!!!

Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, God, and know my heart, test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
