Updates and Highlights for Our Boating Community

Hi Dana Point Boater,

As the holiday season approaches, we invite you to celebrate the joy of our boating community and stay updated on the efforts that make Dana Point Harbor a vibrant place for all boaters. We're excited to update you on our ongoing advocacy efforts, including the latest developments in the appeals case. Don’t miss this month’s 'Boater of the Month' feature, where we spotlight one of our remarkable harbor community members. Could it be someone you know—or someone you’d love to meet? Here’s what’s happening:

Viewing Oral Arguments

Anyone who wants to view the oral arguments on the appeal regarding the right to contest the slip fee increases can do so in person. This is a critical moment for our appeal, and we encourage all interested boaters to attend. However, there may be limited space, and you can also view the arguments online.

  • Date: December 17, 2024
  • Time: 9:30 AM
  • Location: Court of Appeals, 601 W Santa Ana Blvd, Santa Ana, CA 92701
  • View online: Court Oral Argument Webcast

The instructions for viewing online are attached. You must wait until 10 or 15 minutes before the arguments start to click on the “View Oral Arguments” button next to our calendar date and time.

The attorneys for each side have 15 minutes to argue. However, the party that appeals often argues for only 10 or 11 minutes initially to reserve time to reply to the arguments of the opposing party.

We still need donations to the Legal Fund to cover the ongoing costs and fees associated with pursuing this litigation on behalf of boaters. Please contribute today. We appreciate your continued support!

Boater of the Month

Meet Jesse: Boater, World Traveler, and Community Spirit

A retired Marine with a remarkable military career spanning nearly four decades (1971 to 2009), Jesse served in every branch of the armed services except the Air Force. Most proudly identifying as a Marine, his service took him across the globe, instilling a deep appreciation for camaraderie and connection—qualities he brings to life on G19 Dock, Cove Side, where he keeps his boat, Goose.

Known for his vibrant dockside gatherings, Jesse has a knack for drawing out the talents of his fellow boaters. His legendary events celebrate community, featuring shared dishes, live music performed by gifted boaters, sing-alongs with thoughtfully distributed lyrics, and lively conversations that make everyone feel at home. Jesse’s warm spirit, wealth of knowledge, and gift for bringing people together make him a treasured Dana Point Harbor community member.

Take a page from Jesse’s book and get to know your fellow boaters! Everyone has unique talents and knowledge to share, and together, we can create a thriving, connected harbor community.

Holiday Story – “A Thanksgiving Turkey Afloat”

Captain "Wet Turkey"

Every harbor carries its share of tales. This one entertains—though it might sound believable enough to make you wonder!

One Thanksgiving, a group of boaters decided to host a potluck aboard their docked boats, with each person contributing a dish. Marlin prided himself on his culinary skills and volunteered to cook the turkey. However, his boat’s oven lacked the capacity for a feast—better suited for reheating leftovers than roasting a 20-pound bird. Undeterred, Marlin decided to improvise. He borrowed a portable propane grill, placed it on his swim step, and carefully loaded the turkey. The aroma soon wafted across the harbor, drawing curious onlookers to G13 Dock. Everything went smoothly until an unexpected wave rolled in.

As Marlin tended to the grill, a passing boat cruised by a little too fast, sending a large wake toward the dock. The wave surged over Marlin’s swim step, soaking the grill and causing it to tip precariously. Before he could react, the turkey tumbled into the water, followed closely by the entire grill, disappearing beneath the surface with a splash.

Determined not to let the holiday feast sink (literally), a fellow boater jumped in with a net to retrieve the bird. Miraculously, the turkey remained intact! After a quick rinse and a dash of extra seasoning, the turkey returned to the grill and eventually landed on the table with a slightly ‘sea-salt brined’ flavor. The crowd roared with laughter and crowned Marlin “Captain Turkey” for the evening, and the story of the harbor turkey became a Thanksgiving legend.

Although this tale exists purely in the realm of imagination, it reminds us to embrace humor, enjoy community, and always stay ready to improvise—especially as boaters.

Happy Thanksgiving from the

Dana Point Boaters Association!
