Every harbor carries its share of tales. This one entertains—though it might sound believable enough to make you wonder!
One Thanksgiving, a group of boaters decided to host a potluck aboard their docked boats, with each person contributing a dish. Marlin prided himself on his culinary skills and volunteered to cook the turkey. However, his boat’s oven lacked the capacity for a feast—better suited for reheating leftovers than roasting a 20-pound bird. Undeterred, Marlin decided to improvise. He borrowed a portable propane grill, placed it on his swim step, and carefully loaded the turkey. The aroma soon wafted across the harbor, drawing curious onlookers to G13 Dock. Everything went smoothly until an unexpected wave rolled in.
As Marlin tended to the grill, a passing boat cruised by a little too fast, sending a large wake toward the dock. The wave surged over Marlin’s swim step, soaking the grill and causing it to tip precariously. Before he could react, the turkey tumbled into the water, followed closely by the entire grill, disappearing beneath the surface with a splash.
Determined not to let the holiday feast sink (literally), a fellow boater jumped in with a net to retrieve the bird. Miraculously, the turkey remained intact! After a quick rinse and a dash of extra seasoning, the turkey returned to the grill and eventually landed on the table with a slightly ‘sea-salt brined’ flavor. The crowd roared with laughter and crowned Marlin “Captain Turkey” for the evening, and the story of the harbor turkey became a Thanksgiving legend.
Although this tale exists purely in the realm of imagination, it reminds us to embrace humor, enjoy community, and always stay ready to improvise—especially as boaters.
