Cornerstone Class Offered for those Exploring Church Membership
Everyone needs a church. People need a church to grow in relationship to God. Through a church, God provides some of the closest friendships in life. A church also shows people how to use their gifts and talents to minister to others. So it is really important that people feel confident in finding the right church.
That's why I have put together the Cornerstone Class. It is a three-session class especially designed for those who are exploring the idea of church membership. The Cornerstone Class seeks to answer common, basic questions about Jesus Christ and his church in general and Ancient City Baptist Church in particular. This class is very relaxed and informal with absolutely no pressure to join.
The class will be held on three consecutive Sundays: September 10, 17, and 24. The class will be held in Room 205 during the Sunday School class time, 9:40-10:45 a.m. (We chose this time because there are classes offered for children or any other family members at the same time for the convenience of those who attend.) The Cornerstone Class will start each week with a snacks provided by the church in the Fellowship Hall.
Are you an attender or someone who has recently joined that would like to be a part of our Cornerstone Class? To enroll or get more information, you may use the Communication Card or contact the church office at (904) 829-3476 or While you are welcome to simply drop in the morning of our first session, letting us know you are coming will help us be sure to have adequate materials on hand. Members, do you know others who would be interested? Encourage them to consider it; you might even attend with them if that would help them make the decision to attend.

Ronnie Fussell
Jim Lee Dinner
September 16 at 6 pm
Every year our church has a dinner named for a layman who had a heart for men and loved to see them gather in the Lord's name. Although Mr. Jim Lee has gone to his reward, we continue the tradition he established because it provides our men with an opportunity to invite a friend to a free steak dinner and to hear the Christian testimony of an outstanding Christian man. This year our speaker will be Ronnie Fussell, Duval County Clerk of Court.

A Jacksonville native, Ronnie does not consider himself to be a politician, but rather a businessman fulfilling his community service. He was inspired by several of his mentors, businessmen willing to get involved and impact their community, who served on the City Council during the first years of consolidation. He admired these men who used good business sense to help create the Jacksonville he loves and has long enjoyed. Ronnie takes seriously his duty to the city and the role he has been elected to fulfill. He pledges to both the citizens of Jacksonville and to his colleagues to do his best to make wise, fair decisions.

Although a businessman at heart, the political realm is not unfamiliar to him. In 1995, Fussell joined Mayor John Delaney's Administration serving four years as Director of Government/Business Relations and Legislative Affairs. His experience also includes service under Jacksonville Mayors Ed Austin, Tommy Hazouri and John Peyton. He is actively involved with ongoing interaction with state and federal agencies as well.

In the midst of all these wonderful opportunities, Fussell considers his most important role to be a husband to his wife, Rebecca, and father to his son, Chandler. He enjoys playing golf, watching sports and old westerns, reading, and spending time with his family. The Fussells live on the Westside of Jacksonville and have been  active members of Westside Baptist Church for 36 years.

Don't forget to put your name on the list at the church and to invite a friend.

Soup, Salad, and Scripture
Fall 2017

The focus of studies in Soup, Salad, and Scripture has always been on Scripture. In an earlier time, people took their lunch hour at work to come to ACBC for Bible study. While we no longer have a "lunch hour from work" we still gather together during Tuesday lunch to study God's Word.

A few years ago we saw how God preserved His Word through the centuries following the 2nd century. Then we traced the path of God's Word being taken to every corner of the globe. We explored some of the creative aspects (eternity past to eternity future) of God's spoken Word. Last year we began a study on the Eternal Word as seen throughout the whole Bible. Actually, we barely covered the times of Abraham and Moses.

This fall we will continue tracing the basic doctrines of Biblical truth evidenced in the Old Testament. In all of this, we have identified that God's truth is true for all people in all times and all places. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."

Our fall studies will begin at 11:30 am on Tuesday, September 12 and continue until the end of November.  Lunch is provided for a $5 donation. Each session concludes at 1 pm. All women and men are encouraged to attend.

Young Lives
Report by Denise Inman

What is the vision of Young Lives St. Augustine?

To reach teen moms by entering their world, modeling the unconditional love of Christ, and encouraging them to become the women and mothers God created them to be. Through mentoring, our teen moms are empowered to make positive choices, set and achieve goals, and live a future rooted in Christ.

How long has ACBC played a role in the Young Lives StA ministry?

Since its very beginning on May 2, 2013! It was evident to see God was in the ministry from the very start. The day began with my learning I was to be laid off work later in the year and St. Augustine received 11 inches of rain in a very short time. Downtown was quite flooded and it was still raining. As much as I wanted to postpone the meeting until a later date, God reminded me a group of ladies had committed to being there and anyone who braved the weather would certainly be faithful. He was right! Nine women from area churches and three who run the Young Lives program in Jacksonville showed up in our Fellowship Hall and Young Lives StA was born. What an AMAZING four years it has been!

What has Young Lives StA been up to in the past year?

A lot! We held regular gatherings called 'club' twice a month in the Fellowship Hall. During our time together we have dinner, play games, do crafts, and sometimes just act silly. At the end of every gathering one of our leaders shares a Bible message that speaks of Christ's love for them.  Leaders also spend one on one time with the moms throughout the rest of the month and often stop by their school, St. Gerard Campus, to say hi and have lunch. We also had the opportunity to take some of the moms to a weekend camp in January. Camp is an amazing time to get the girls away from everyday life (even their cell phones are put away while at camp) and for the Gospel to be shared with them in a relatable and impactful way. We were unable to attend summer camp this year as our teen moms who graduated had jobs (hallelujah) and the others were about to give birth or had just had their babies.

More news about this year's plans and how you can help next month.
