Arts Updates, Interviews, Calendar, Calls for Artists and Volunteers, Auditions --- It's All Here in Arts Blast, Arts Blast on the Air, and on Facebook. | Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere
Volume 6 No. 1 | January 5, 2024
Notes from the Editor:
Oh, what a week to start a new year and I mean that in the best way! I got to see the Wednesday matinee performance of Jersey Boys with friends at Riverside Theatre and am very glad we got in early. From what I'm hearing, the entire run is expected to be sold out in short order. From Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Tequesta came an email this morning noting that Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, not opening until January 8, is 92 percent sold out already. The show is also at the Titusville Playhouse January 12 – February 11 but I haven't checked their ticket supply.
I hesitate to nag, but I do it every year anyway. Keep an eye on the Arts Blast calendar and when you see something you'd like to attend, DO NOT dillydally.
I'll venture to say that most of our venues and arts organizations send out free email newsletters, an excellent way to get ahead of the crowd in the ticket line. Sign up!
Also on my thumbs-up list is Nutcracker on the Indian River from Ballet Vero Beach. After seeing the terrific performance last weekend, I went to the BVB YouTube page and watched the documentary, A Decade of Dance, and now have an added truckload (if you saw it, you'll understand the transportation reference) of respect for the dedicated team that puts it all together. Even before all the snowflakes were swept off the stage, that team was working on the first performance of the new year, Choreographer's Notebook: CAMDAM, January 19-21, at the McAlpin Fine Arts Center in Fort Pierce and the VBHS Performing Arts Center.

Chautauqua South with the Friends of the Martin County Library System is Back!
What is Chautauqua South?
The Chautauqua movement began in 1874 as an open-air classroom for school teachers on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in New York. The idea caught on and soon summer Chautauquas were springing up across the nation. Taking inspiration from New York’s Chautauqua Institution, the MCLS decided in 1992 to reproduce the Chautauqua experience in South Florida. The library system’s southern counterpart offers scores of diverse programs designed to enlighten, educate, and entertain by featuring an eclectic array of artists, authors, musicians, entertainers, and lecturers. Let the Martin County Library System be your center for music, art, literature, and fun! Click here for the calendar.

Jim Kalupa
The World As I See It
Fifth Avenue Gallery in Melbourne will open the new year with The World As I See It, the photo art of Jim Kalupa, a Wisconsin native living in Brevard County since 2005. Photography and travel are two of the great passions in his life. As a result, Kalupa said, he has covered much of the globe in well over forty years, always with camera in hand. While much of his work is travel inspired, most recently he has started capturing the beauty of his Florida home. He studied photography formally in the 1980s, but career obligations at the time required his full attention. Since moving to Florida, he’s become completely dedicated to his photo art which he views as a constant and evolving challenge.
An opening reception for both artists is January 5, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Fifth Avenue Gallery, Melbourne

Sharply funny and evocative play that questions women’s place in the world and with one another. It's a testament to the power of female friendship and the beauty that women gain--not lose--over time. Four women meet once a year for a ritual photo shoot, chronicling their changing (and aging) selves as they navigate love, careers, children, and the complications of history. But when these private photographs threaten to go public, relationships are tested, forcing the women to rise to the challenge and deal with whatever lies ahead.

Pineapple Playhouse
Play On!
by Rick Abbot
January 12 – 28
Play On! is a rollicking comedy that takes you behind-the-scenes of a theater group struggling to put on a play amidst a flurry of hilarious misadventures. As the beleaguered director attempts to wrangle a motley crew of eccentric actors, a confused tech team, and a meddling playwright, chaos predictably ensues. Add to the mix a script that keeps changing until opening night, and you've got a madcap journey through the tumultuous world of amateur theatre. Play On! is an unpretentious, laughter-inducing tribute to the unscripted humor of life in the theater, a fun night at the playhouse.
