Historical Tidbit: Home Deliveries
Pictured: Fruit Peddlers with Draft Horses and Covered Wagon, circa 1928
Back in the early 1900's, going to the store was not a very common practice. Twice a week the grocery man would travel around town in the morning with his horse and wagon, visiting every home, and take orders for the dry goods that were needed. It would have been an item that the homeowner could not grow or raise themselves such as flour, coffee, tea, etc. That afternoon he would return to each home with their delivery.

There was also a gentleman from Middleboro who would come around with his wagon selling meat. He was the butcher and usually came once a week. He would have a large drawer on the back of the wagon where the meat was kept and would cut what you wanted from the meat he carried that day. He would also take an order if he didn't have what you wanted.

West Bridgewater Native is Riding High
left-cover from 3/19/21, article pic in center, right-cover 2/19/21
Dorothy Douglas, Dorrie to her friends and family, grew up riding horses in West Bridgewater. She is now one of the top equestrians in the country. Dorothy recently took time out of her busy day training and competing in Ocala, Florida to talk with me. "I am currently competing in the hunters and jumpers events at the World Equestrian Center," said Dorrie. WEC is the largest equestrian complex in the nation.

Dorrie's family operates Stonecroft Farm. Horse showing was a huge part of her childhood. She went on to college and wound up taking some time away from the equestrian life. "But," She said, "I always saw myself coming back to horses."

She has worked for MTM Farm for the past 10 years and is thankful for the opportunities she has had. Dorothy's favorite horses over her years of riding? MTM Through the Looking Glass who she rides right now, and she remembers fondly S & L Elite, which Dottie rode when she was starting out.

It was a pleasure to talk with Dorothy. She said she loves to be exposed to the level of competition where she is in Florida, but that it is always nice to come back home to West Bridgewater.

Growth

"Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they're supposed to help you discover who you are."
~ Bernice Johnson Reagon

"Life is about growth and exploration, not achieving a fixed state of balance. You have a very limited time on earth to experience all that you can. Figuring out how to squeeze the most out of your family, work, and spirituality is your life's purpose. Go do it."
~ Mel Robbins

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
~ Mark Twain
"Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still."
~Chinese Proverb

Like a garden: a little rain, a little sun, and we grow... slowly we grow.
~ Jacquie
