Supporting The Arts & Arts Councils Everywhere

Volume 4 No. 5 | February 11, 2022

Notes from the Editor:

If you like to watch confusion in action, you should have seen me trying to schedule features on Art Martin and Martin Arts in the same issue of Arts Blast. I think Art Martin will wait for next week while I give extra space to Martin Arts and the 2022 ArtsFest in Stuart. What a relief that decision was! And ArtsFest isn't the only festival around, so clear your calendar for a busy weekend, not counting the Super Bowl and the Olympics.

AAUW Vero Beach (The American Association of University Women) presents First Ladies and Their Presidents, two one-act plays that bring to life first Abigail and John Adams, and then Lou and Herbert Hoover. The program was created by Sue and William Wills, a veteran husband-and-wife writing and acting team. They have spent 44 years in theater, have presented over 9,000 performances together, and are in their 26th year of "bringing to life the stories of 34 different Presidential couples."

The program will raise money for AAUW’s Local Program Fund, which supports scholarships, grants and programs for women and girls in Indian River County and highlight the role of women in history. These two presidential couples were chosen because of the strength of the first ladies. AAUW is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.

$40 per ticket. For students, including Girl Scouts: $20. Tickets available at the Emerson Center Box Office (Tues & Thurs from 10AM – 1 PM) or at theemersoncenter.com/first-ladies-their-presidents/

MEET AND GREET WITH JUDY BURGARELLA AND SHOTSI LAJOIE

Old friend Judy Burgarella emailed to make sure we don't miss the I Love Art showcase at the Environmental Learning Center featuring 35 of her nature-related paintings and many large pieces by another old friend, Shotsi Cain Lajoie.

Also at ELC:

The Environmental Learning Center is hosting Spring Fling; a juried art show April 1st-May 31st in their Lagoon Room Gallery.

Artists are invited to submit up to three pieces of art by February 28th for consideration. The categories for Spring Fling are Painting, Drawing, Mixed Media and Photography-Graphic Art-Digital. Artwork should be nature-inspired and created between January 1, 2020, to the submission time. Invitations to participate will be extended to artists by March 15th.

Awards will be given for Best in Show and a First, Second and Third prize will be given in each of the four categories. The Spring Fling show will hang from April 1st-May 31st and the pieces in the exhibit will be available for purchase.

Highwaymen Weekend at Backus

From the Backus Museum:

The A.E. Backus Museum & Gallery will present the annual Highwaymen Celebration Weekend Friday, February 18 through Sunday, February 20, 2022 during regular hours each day. Visitors to the Museum can enjoy a range of special offerings, including viewing the special exhibition The Highwaymen: Art / History. Admission will be free, with activities outside and inside at 500 North Indian River Drive in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce.

The Highwaymen are a loose collective of Florida artists who learned landscape painting techniques and began a creative enterprise of selling their bold and rapidly-produced works of art to customers up and down the state’s Atlantic Coast from the trunks of cars. This movement started in Fort Pierce in the 1950s at a time in the segregated South when opportunities were limited for African Americans, yet they persevered and succeeded. In 2004, 26 of the original artists were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, and in 2016 the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American Culture and History opened with 18 Highwaymen paintings in its collection.

From McKee Botanical Garden:

McKee Botanical Garden’s highly-anticipated 12th Annual Motor Car Exhibition will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2022 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm and is sponsored by Wilmington Trust. After having to cancel its Annual Motor Car Exhibition in 2021 due to COVID-19, McKee is thrilled to be able to host this event this year. This year’s show includes outstanding European Cars Featuring the Ferrari and Other Italian Exotics. This fun, family-friendly exhibition of motorsport excellence allows visitors to see rare cars like a 1958 Ferrari California Spyder, a lovely 1963 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale, and a powerful 1984 Ferrari BB 512i.

NOTE: NEW OFF-SITE PARKING AREA AVAILABLE THIS YEAR

This year we have a new off-site parking area. Parking will be available at either the Garden or at McKee’s new off-site parking lot with shuttle buses available and is located less than a mile south of the Garden off of US Highway 1 at 146 Vista Royale Square, Vero Beach, FL 32962.

McKee’s annual motor car exhibition is one of the top shows in the area with its unique garden setting. The show is hosted by our dedicated Car Show Committee including Dick Kesler, Bill Maule, Dave Prossick, Norman Ridgely, Chuck Roberts, Wayne Sandlin, John Schumann, Jr., and Jerry Weick.

In conjunction with the car show, visitors will be able to enjoy McKee’s new Dinosaurs Around the World: The Great Outdoors Exhibition, which is on display now through May 1, 2022. This exhibition features 10 animatronic dinosaurs, such as the mighty T. rex of North America; the bi-pedal predator Herrerasaurus, one of the first dinosaurs to appear on Earth, and the bizarre, bony-crested Oviraptor from Mongolia. Where else can you enjoy rare automobiles and extinct dinosaurs for the price of one exhibit?  The Garden Café will be open for lunch during this event and will feature a wide array of lunch options.

This project is sponsored in part by the Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and the State of Florida (Section 286.25, Florida Statutes).
