NEW IBERIA, La. – The 4th annual Shadows-on-the-Teche Plein Air Painting Competition will culminate in an Awards Ceremony and Silent Auction on Friday, March 16 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Shadows Visitor Center (32o E. Main St.).
Each of the 35 artists submit two paintings, completed during their time in Acadiana, for the juried competition. Starting at 7 p.m., Erik Koeppel, New Hampshire based plein air artist and judge for this year’s juried competition, will present awards. In addition to Best of Show, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and Honorable Mention, this year Koeppel will also select a recipient for the Mayor’s Award.
All artwork from this year’s artists will be on display and available for purchase. Paintings submitted for the juried competition will be sold by silent auction. New this year will be the Dick Blick Small Wall, which will offer original plein air paintings at entry level price points.
Plein Air:
The
Shadows-on-the-Teche Plein Air Competition will take place March 10 - 16, 2018. Other festivities planned during competition week are a public program and Paint Out. On Wednesday, March 14, Koeppel will provide a free public program on plein air painting at the Shadows Visitor Center.
The Paint Out will be held Friday, March 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Artists of all ages and skill levels are invited to paint in the gardens of the Shadows and along downtown Main Street. Starting at 1 p.m., artists will bring their artwork to the Sliman Theatre where Koeppel will present awards for the Paint Out and give a talk to all participants. An exhibit of art work from the Paint Out is planned for later this summer. The public program and Paint Out are free to attend, though registration is required for the Paint Out.
About the Shadows-on-the-Teche:
The Shadows-on-the-Teche, National Trust for Historic Preservation site, opened to the public in 1961 with the mission to preserve the buildings, landscape, collections, and historical integrity of the site; to research and interpret through education programs a 19th century southern Louisiana plantation economy and community and their evolution; and to encourage an appreciation of and interest in historic preservation. The Shadows and the National Trust are not-for-profit organizations that are responsible for their own operating budget and receives no federal funding. In addition, the Shadows does not receive funding from state, parish, or city government. The site supports itself through admissions, special programs and events, and donations to the Friends of the Shadows.
