Our newest inductee to the Anderson Hall of Fame is Brett Newberry, CFE, CPA, ’81. Brett is president and shareholder of Newberry & Associates, a CPA and consulting firm based in Gallup, New Mexico. He leads the firm that was started by his father, and which he joined shortly after finishing his BBA at Anderson. There he lends his technical and leadership expertise to tax planning and management consulting, internal audit services, and consulting regarding fiscal management for small businesses, client quality of life and income, as well as forensic accounting services to protect businesses against inefficiencies, waste and fraud.

He actively supports his industry nationally and locally, and his community by serving on numerous boards and associations, including our own Parker Center for Family Business and the UNM Lobo Club. He’s passionate about our football and basketball teams, and he’s a proud Dallas Cowboys fan.
FACULTY EXCELLENCE
Congratulations to Shawn Berman, Anderson Professor of Business and Society, for being selected as the 2021 Sumner Marcus Award. This award is given by the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management in recognition of and appreciation for outstanding contributions of service and scholarship to the field. Dr. Berman’s award brings UNM into an elite club, among only three other universities to have multiple Sumner Marcus winners, joining Cal-Berkeley, University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Northern Iowa.
Kudos to Brian Gillespie, Anderson Associate Professor of Marketing and Daniels Fund Initiative Fellow, who was named by Albuquerque Business First as a 40 Under Forty honoree. Each year, Albuquerque Business First recognizes the best and brightest young professionals in New Mexico through this award program.
Congratulations to Trevor Spoelma and Cristina Bailey for receiving WeR1 Faculty Success Summer Awards! This new internal funding initiative provided funds this summer for faculty whose research productivity has been significantly impacted by COVID-19. Awards were provided for projects promoting faculty members’ research, creative and scholarly activities.
STUDENT SUCCESS
Anderson accounting student Michelle Young is among 253 students from U.S. colleges and universities receiving $10,000 scholarships from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board. Michelle is working toward a Master of Accounting degree at Anderson, with a focus on auditing and taxation. She is also an intern for Schlenker & Cantwell, P.A., Certified Public Accountants. She plans to continue her career in public accounting after she completes her graduate degree.

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 directs that funds generated from the collection of PCAOB monetary penalties fund merit scholarships for students in accredited accounting degree programs. The program's goals are to benefit outstanding students likely to become auditors and to make a difference to eligible students who might otherwise pursue a different career path.
Peedee Lee, an Anderson Master of Accounting student, has received the 2021 Federation of Schools of Accountancy (FSA) Student Award. This award distinguishes her as the department’s outstanding MACCT student this year.

FSA is the organization of accredited graduate programs in accounting, promoting and supporting high-quality accredited graduate accounting programs in the United States and abroad. Anderson is a full-fledged and active member of the FSA, and its associate membership includes many of the largest public accounting firms in the United States, state societies of CPAs, and the American Institute of CPAs.
