Anderson inducted three new Hall of Fame honorees and two Young Alumni honorees at the Anderson Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum on February 19. Anderson recognized the recipient’s professional accomplishments with a dinner surrounded by their friends, family, and colleagues.

Anderson Announces Partnership with Osaka Metropolitan University


Anderson recently signed an agreement with Osaka Metropolitan University (OMU) to guarantee the transfer of credits for doctoral students participating in Osaka’s Future Innovators Development Program (FInD). This international collaboration strengthens the relationship between the two institutions and creates new opportunities for sustained global partnership.

Anderson Launches Experiential Learning Plan to Grow Accounting Enrollment


Anderson has developed a five-year plan with the objective of increasing the enrollment of undergraduate and graduate accounting students through opportunities outside of the classroom. Initiatives for the first-year focus on removing barriers to professional exposure by funding student attendance to conferences and competitions, hosting networking and recruitment events, and creating faculty stipends to support and oversee these efforts.

UNM Takes First and Second Place in Inaugural Rio Grande Research Challenge


The first-ever Rio Grande Research Challenge took place at Anderson, where UNM swept the competition and earned both first and second place against NMSU in a head-to-head stock pitch showdown.


Our winning team — Elizabeth Kent, Abhinav Punnakuzhy, Ethan Campbell and Ananya Mulakala — took first with a strong buy recommendation on John Deere. Judges highlighted their clarity, depth and confident delivery.


UNM’s second team — Jake McFall, Nico Huggins and Samuel Landis — placed second with another strong buy recommendation supported by rigorous research.

Marisa Magallanez’s Journey from UNM to Nonprofit Leadership


When Anderson alum Marisa Magallanez walked into her flamenco class as an undergraduate, she never imagined it would spark a passion for nonprofit leadership. What began as an artistic curiosity soon became a gateway to community, purpose, and impact.


On Jan. 1, Magallanez officially began her role as president and CEO of the Albuquerque Community Foundation and New Mexico Community Trust. A native New Mexican, she brings both deep nonprofit expertise and a profound love for her home state to the role.

UNM Student Details Experience as a 2025 CREW Network Foundation Scholarship Recipient


In 2025, UNM student, Krista Garnand, was named a recipient of the Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Network Foundation student scholarship, a prestigious award granted to just 40 students across the United States and Canadian provinces. Krista was the only student from New Mexico selected and received a $5,000 scholarship, along with a six-month mentorship with a CREW Visionary, a CREW Network Student membership, and the opportunity to attend the 2025 CREW Network Convention, held October 8–10 in Austin, Texas.

Maribeth and Chris Thornton Establish Healthcare Leadership Scholarship


Maribeth and Chris Thornton have made a generous donation to Anderson to establish the Thornton Family Scholarship for Healthcare Leadership. The scholarship will support Anderson graduate students who aspire to pursue leadership roles in the healthcare industry.


The Thorntons’ decision to create the scholarship reflects their shared commitment to investing in people and expanding access to educational opportunities.


Maribeth Thornton was selected as the alumni speaker at the fall 2025 Anderson Convocation. In her speech, she explained that her decision to pursue an MBA grew out of her experience stepping into leadership roles as a nurse. Through those roles, she recognized the importance of business and management skills for effective leadership. Maribeth currently serves as chief nursing officer at UNM Hospitals.


Anderson is grateful for the Thorntons' donation, which will significantly impact graduate students while supporting the continued growth of the healthcare field.

FACULTY RESEARCH EXCELLENCE

UNM Redesignated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity Research


UNM has been redesignated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Research (CAE-R) through the 2030 academic year. This prestigious recognition reflects a strong, interdisciplinary collaboration among the Anderson School of Management, the Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) within the School of Engineering, reinforcing UNM’s position as a leading research institution.


The redesignation effort was led by Anderson faculty members Sandra Moore, Sc.D., clinical business faculty member, and Robert Luo, Ph.D., distinguished professor in the Department of Marketing, Information, and Decision Sciences (MIDS), alongside School of Engineering faculty Christos Christodoulou, Ph.D., professor in Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Afsah Anwar, Ph.D., assistant professor in Computer Science.
