Fall 2015 Newsletter:
I'm writing this in a very good mood, owing largely to the terrific success of Astoria Fine Art's "Contemporary Wildlife" Show; thank you Astoria for doing such a marvelous job promoting and hosting this prestigious event! But of course there's no rest for the wicked, the worthy, or the weary, and whichever one I may be from day to day, I'm hardly an exception to the rule.
Fall is always the busiest time for wildlife artists. For whatever reason, most of the big events in the wildlife art world insist on a September schedule, and this year is no exception. My work will once again be included in the National Museum of Wildlife Art's annual Western Visions Wild 100, but for the first time in eleven years I will not be making the trip to Jackson Hole for the opening during Fall Arts Week. I'll be far too busy with preparations for
Andrew Denman: The Modern Wild, my national touring museum exhibition, which debuts at the Lindsay Wildlife Experience in mid-September.
This show has been over four years in the making, and has presented a real learning curve with its overwhelming logistical demands, frustrating scheduling challenges, and unending paperwork. Fortunately consummate professional Dr. David J. Wagner is the tour director and curator of the show and has been great to work with. The Lindsay Wildlife Experience's stellar director Norma Bishop and her staff have also made the process as smooth as possible, and of course the show could never happen without many generous collectors who agreed to loan key pieces for the more than eight month long tour. I can hardly wait to share the results of our labors with you. And if you can't see the show in California, you'll have other opportunities when
The Modern Wild moves to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson this October and The Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum in New Jersey in February.

Andrew Denman: The Modern Wild
is the first-ever, national touring museum exhibition of the artwork of Andrew Denman. After four years in the making, this mid-career retrospective will premiere at The Lindsay Wildlife Experience in Walnut Creek, CA, in September. Andrew is pleased to partner with the Lindsay Wildlife Experience, a treasured local institution which played an important role in inspiring Andrew's love of nature as a child.

For over fifty years, the Lindsay Wildlife Experience (formerly the Alexander Lindsay Junior Museum and Lindsay Wildlife Museum) has fostered a love of and understanding for the sensitive ecosystems and abundant wildlife of the San Francisco Bay Area. The adjoining wildlife hospital cares for and rehabilitates thousands of injured native animals each year while the museum showcases non-releasable wildlife ambassadors and conducts a wide range of programs that encourage the pubic to interact positively with their natural environment. Classrooms offer a variety of educational opportunities while the extensive gallery space hosts many important art exhibitions, most notably the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's venerable "Birds in Art" exhibition.
The Modern Wild
will consist of thirty-five original works of art, including drawings, preparatory studies, and key pieces from private and public collections alike, in addition to the first ever public display of the artist's own poetry. Andrew Denman is at the leading edge of the contemporary wildlife art movement; his unique combination of hyperrealism with stylization and abstraction imbues his work with a strongly contemporary flavor that immediately distinguishes him from his peers. The Modern Wild encapsulates the last fifteen years of Denman's career, and features an array of didactic panels which describe and interpret the compelling story of the artist's commitment to artistic experimentation, an uncompromising dedication to excellence, and an ambitious vision that has positioned him at the forefront of an artistic vanguard of the best animal artists working today.
The exhibition is produced by David J. Wagner, L.L.C. The company's President and Chief Curator is Dr. David J. Wagner, author of American Wildlife Art, considered by many the definitive book on wildlife painting, print-making, and sculpture in North America.
Wagner is the Tour Director for The Society of Animal Artists and has developed and toured such notable traveling museum exhibitions as "The Art of Robert Bateman," "Biodiversity in the Art of Carel Pieter Brest van Kempen," and "Kent Ulberg: A Retrospective." He now enters the next chapter in his scholarly exegesis of this fascinating genre with Andrew Denman: The Modern Wild. Both Dr. Wagner and Andrew Denman are excited to bring this collection of the artist's work into the public eye.

In conjunction with his national touring exhibition, "The Modern Wild," which will be on display in the ASDM's Ironwood Gallery, join Andrew Denman for three days of hands-on instruction in painting wildlife with acrylics, "Your Modern Wild." Workshop participants will be guided through the process of effectively working with photo reference, creating a composition, under-painting, building up detail, glazing, and final highlighting in the creation of a finished painting. Denman will focus on the pre-work necessary to ensure a successful artwork and effectively approaching challenging textures such as feathers and fur. Students may bring their own reference photos, but the instructor will have additional photos on hand at the workshop.

This summer, Guy and I took a short but well-deserved break and drove up to visit our dear friend, Connie, in Oregon. Having worked non-stop for months in preparation for "Contemporary Wildlife" while simultaneously planning various aspects of
The Modern Wild, it was important to slow down for a moment and reflect. Few people who are not self-employed (or living with someone who is) fully understand the demands of running a business; one thing I can say for sure is that even for someone like myself who is
hard wired to "stop and smell the roses," it can be very hard to see anything but deadlines, e-mails, marketing, and logistics. This is especially dangerous for an artist who draws his inspiration from the peaceful observation of nature, and who relies on that very peaceful time to recharge his batteries, both physical and spiritual.
We were off to a rough start when our night camping in Shasta on the drive up was stiflingly hot and punctuated by dry thunder storms, more than a little unnerving in a drought afflicted forest in high summer and enough to scare Guy into sleeping in the car. Fortunately we arrived to sunny but blessedly cool conditions in Lincoln City were we had a great time catching up with our former neighbor and her family and meeting some of her friends. Despite my best efforts to relax, I found myself slipping into work mode and fighting bad cell signals to answer a few important e-mails on our first night in Oregon. Fortunately, the lure of the Pacific Northwest Rainforest was too strong, and before I knew it, I was wandering happily through the green gloom of redwood forests mantled with great clumps and sheets of moss and lichen, listening for the tantalizing echoes of birds telegraphing their strange and ethereal messages in the lofty canopy overhead. We saw no shortage of Stellar Jays, encountered plenty of squirrels (much to the delight of our dogs, Ella & Enzi), and had a memorable sighting of some adorable fauns. Unfortunately our later attempts to spot whales off the coast were unsuccessful.

When not looking for inspiration from nature, we found plenty of joy in some terrific meals and visits to local galleries and art institutions, including Alder House Glassblowing, where we watched a magical demonstration of this fascinating craft.

Back home we were present for the very well-attended grand opening of our friend Brian Fowler's latest venture, Diablo Fine Art Gallery. As you can see from the pictures, the artfully catered reception was a big hit. Now, after only just a few months in business, the gallery has already held several events, including "A Conversation with Andrew Denman & Guy Combes" which is available for viewing on YouTube (see column above right). Speaking of time to reflect, another important thing for a working artist to consider along with slowing down, is to appreciate those people who, in this challenging business, are doing things right. Running a gallery is one of the hardest jobs to do well, and Brian continues to put his best foot vigorously forward in these crucial early days. The Bay Area East of the Caldecott Tunnel has long been in need of a quality commercial art gallery, and I hope those of you who are in the market for original art will consider making a purchase from Diablo Fine Art. Show your support for a local business and the artists it represents.

This second annual show at the idyllic British sculpture park and garden will feature new works by Andrew Denman and a host of talented and dedicated artists from around the world. Exhibition runs from November 14th- December 11th 2015
The Modern Wild Tour: October 2015- April 2016
Look for Andrew Denman's mid-career retrospective touring show as it makes its way across the US from it's Walnut Creek, California debut. The show will appear at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Tucson, AZ, from October 31st, 2015- January 3rd, 2016. "Icarus Fallen" Figurative 15 3/4 x 23 3/4" Graphite & Nero Pencil on Watercolor Board I've long been fascinated with Greek Mythology, and one of the most compelling stories is the Icarus fable. Not only does it provide a beautiful and evocative image of a man with wings, but it offers a compelling lesson about the dangers of ambition and the necessity for humility in the face of nature. In preparation for Sculpture by the Lakes' second annual "Drawn" exhibition opening this November, I am currently working on a three part series of drawings that will encapsulate the full arc of the Icarus narrative. Only the final panel, "Icarus Fallen" is finished. Please watch your inbox for a fall supplement sometime in late October or early November with more information about this show and completed images.
