Andrew Martin Finally Figured Out
How to Find His Office
|
With every new job comes the GPS trials of
which route is actually the best commute. But there are some unspoken truths: 1) Some buildings are just
easier to get to than others, and 2)
Never really trust your GPS, even if you programmed it to sound like
Morgan Freeman. But now that
Andrew Martin, shown here with his lovely family, is the new SVP at Avison Young, it looks like he has finally found the best way to get there--with or without the actor's directions.

Andrew's path into
commercial real estate certainly stands out. As a
West Point grad, commercial real estate wasn't exactly the straightaway career path. While serving in the
U.S. Army, he worked in the
artillery unit for three years: one year as an
aide-de-camp and one year working in
administrative roles to the general. After the birth of their first daughter, he and his wife wanted to be closer to their family. His wife is from the Indianapolis area, while his family isn't too far away in Columbus, Ohio. The military helped him transfer his
military experience into relevant business experience; through the jobs placement agency, he interviewed for 14 jobs, received four offers, and took none. Luckily for him, he met
Jeff Henry with Cushman & Wakefield (who has recently retired).
|
Jeff took Andrew
under his wing and showed him the world of commercial real estate. And Andrew was sold. In fact, he didn't even consider any other company. He admitted he may have been slightly naïve about what the industry entailed, but he
quickly learned the ropes. What really excited him about commercial real estate was the
philanthropy, the community and business
relationships, and that it's a job on the f
orefront of what's up and coming in the city. It also gives him the opportunity to
build roots and raise his family in one location.
|
After spending the past
12 years with Cushman & Wakefield, he now steps into his new position with
Avison Young. This large Canadian-based company is one of the
fastest growing companies in the United States. In fact, the Indianapolis office was just
opened last March. He does have some plans and ideas he's working on: "There was a survey of real estate professionals about what they thought the
most important things in a firm are. The first was commission structure, the second was teamwork, followed by technology, and support. Some things are harder to change, like commission structure, but
technology and teamwork will be what moves us forward."
|
| But there's still plenty of time to spend with his family, who goes out west to ski during the winter and spring breaks from school. Andrew says they have about seven favorite places to ski in Colorado and Utah. It's something the Martin family looks forward to every year. (Perhaps he can pretend the view from his 12th floor office is actually the peaks of the mountains--ok, it's definitely a stretch.) Additionally, he volunteers by coaching four travel soccer teams. He played soccer in high school and really loves giving back to his community in this aspect. Not only does he coach these teams, but one of his daughters does competitive cheerleading while the other one plays on a travel basketball team. (Andrew, please tell us where you get all this energy!) |
March is Women's History Month ... Who Has Inspired You?
|
| As President Barack Obama noted in his proclamation Sunday, "Throughout history, women have driven humanity forward on the path to a more equal and just society, contributing in innumerable ways to our character and progress as a people." |
As we celebrate
Women's History Month,
