Anaheim cases: 2,289

As of June 26, Anaheim is at a running total of 2,289 past, active and recovered cases of Covid-19, the condition caused by coronavirus, since reporting by city began in March.

Today's data comes amid a new website release from Orange County Health Care Agency that takes a deeper dive into data reported by city.

Among other data points, the site reports city cases and deaths by ZIP code, information we've never had before today.

We're hopeful that this new data reporting methodology will give us a clearer picture of how the virus is impacting our community and will more accurately reflect daily case counts.

For more on the data from the new site, see the "Anaheim Cases by ZIP Codes" section.

Today OC Health reported 449 new cases in the county, for a running total of 11,960.

Total tests processed by the county is at a revised 207,720, a number that has more than tripled since May 1.

As the virus continues to spread in our community and countywide testing continues to expand, Anaheim and other cities are seeing more new cases.

On May 26, the Orange County Health Care Agency began releasing an estimated number of Covid-19 patients who have recovered countywide.

That number is conservatively estimated at 6,763. This recovery estimate increased significantly with the release of the new county website.

It's unclear whether the formula to calculate the estimate has changed. The website disclaimer says the number is a "point in time count."

Previously, the estimate is calculated by taking the difference between the prior 28-day cumulative case count and current number of deaths.

We'll work to better understand this number and provide updates when we get them.

We still do not have an estimate or actual count of those who have recovered in Anaheim.

But we know the vast majority of those infected thankfully go on to recover.

We now have specifics on deaths recorded for Anaheim. As of June 26, there have been 82 deaths among Anaheim residents from complications of Covid-19.

Fifty-five of those deaths have been at skilled nursing facilities in our city and were older patients with advanced medical conditions.

Our hearts go out to all the families that have lost a loved one.

According to county data, 345 of Anaheim's cases are from skilled nursing facilities, which number more than 30 in Anaheim.

While every death is tragic, Anaheim follows all of Orange County with a relatively low death rate.

Cumulative cases in Anaheim also represent a small fraction, 0.6 percent, of Anaheim's 360,000 residents.

Among cities, Santa Ana has the most cases at 2,515, followed by Anaheim at 2,289, Garden Grove at 691 and Huntington Beach at 537.

Anaheim is the largest in Orange County by population, and also has a large number of skilled nursing facilities, so we would expect to have a higher number of cases compared to other cities in the county.

We are in this together and we'll get through this together.
Anaheim cases by ZIP code

Anaheim has seen 2,289 coronavirus cases across the city since tracking began in March, with the most in the west and central part of the city.

That's according to data broken down by Anaheim's seven ZIP codes and provided by the county of Orange on June 26.

It is the first time the Orange County Health Care Agency has officially released cases and deaths by ZIP code in our city.

The data shows cases by where a patient lives and not necessarily where they contracted Covid-19, the condition caused by coronavirus.

The ZIP codes with the most cases are Anaheim's most densely populated areas.

Fifteen percent, or 345 of Anaheim's cases, are from skilled nursing facilities in our city.

In some parts of the city, nursing facilities make up 30 percent or more of cases.

Sadly, Anaheim has seen 82 deaths from Covid-19.

Two-thirds, or 55 deaths, have been at skilled nursing facilities.

We await further updates and will share them here.
