We thank everyone in Anaheim for doing your part to stem the spread of coronavirus in our community, and we want you to know that as your city, we're here for you.
Anaheim cases: 41,786
This week we saw very low COVID-19 case numbers for Anaheim and Orange County, as we continue to increase vaccinations and stop the spread of the virus.

It's important we continue to fight COVID in all we do and not let our guard down yet.

Anaheim saw an increase of 31 cases in the seven days from April 17-23, while Orange County saw 536 new cases in that time.

Anaheim is at a cumulative 41,786 cases, with 5,360 among children.

Orange County is at a cumulative 253,340 cases, with 26,464 among children.

Sadly, Anaheim has seen 861 people pass from complications of COVID-19, the condition caused by coronavirus. The county has seen a total of 4,918 deaths.

Our hearts go out to the families who have lost someone dear to them.

The county has processed a total of 3,590,415 polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, tests, the standard for diagnosing COVID-19 cases.

Anaheim and Orange County remain in orange Tier 3, the second most permissive in the state's reopening framework.

The state's tiers are primarily based on two measurements, each determined by calculating the seven-day average with a seven-day lag:

  • Average positivity rate of testing
  • Average new daily cases per 100,000 residents

The county's current case rate is 2.8 per 100,000 residents.

The county's current positivity rate is 1.4 percent.

The county's current positivity rate among our harder-hit, low-income communities is 1.7 percent.

Vaccines work, get yours now
More than half of eligible Anaheim residents have had at least one does of the COVID-19 vaccine, with many fully vaccinated.

Among Anaheim residents 16 and older, 54 percent have received at least one shot.

That’s ahead of the nation at 41 percent, California at 52 percent and Orange County at 53 percent.

While there is work ahead, Anaheim’s vaccination rate is encouraging. It is the result of our efforts at large vaccination sites at the Anaheim Convention Center and Disneyland Resort and at weekly neighborhood clinics.

Vaccines are working before our very eyes.

Case and testing positivity rates in Anaheim and Orange County haven’t been this low since the earliest days of the pandemic in spring 2020.

The recovery from the winter case surge has been faster than we saw with the recovery from the summer 2020 case surge.

The difference this time around? Vaccines.

Since we started public vaccines in early January, acceptance and demand has been great. But, in coming weeks, we know we will get through all who are eager and down to those who are hesitant, resistant or face challenges getting vaccinated.

Our Hispanic community remains an area of concern. Among Hispanics 16 and older, vaccination rates are in the teen levels, ranging from about 12 percent to 20 percent depending on ZIP code, with rates about three times lower than the general population.

Language, work and mobility issues are challenges. For those who need extra help, we work with partners to provide weekly neighborhood clinics that bring shots to where people live.

We also urge employers to encourage vaccines and allow time for workers to get vaccinated and recover as needed.

We expect it will just take more time to serve this important part of our city. Hispanic seniors 65 and older started similarly, with low and slow rates of vaccination. They now are at 70 percent or higher, on par with the general population.

White seniors are another area of concern. Their vaccination rates are below that of the same age group for the population as a whole. They are at 45 percent to 63 percent, compared to an average of 77 percent for Anaheim residents 65 and older.

We work directly with seniors on vaccinations at neighborhood clinics. And pharmacies and healthcare providers are stepping up with more shots each week, which is another great option.

There’s a lot at stake. First and foremost is saving lives. Anaheim has seen more than 850 deaths from COVID-19, a stark reminder of the true cost of the pandemic.

While Anaheim, Orange County and California are doing great, other states and countries continue to struggle with case surges. That poses a risk to us with vaccines as our best line of defense.

After a year of devastating economic impacts, Anaheim is back with limited fans at Angel Stadium of Anaheim and Honda Center, the resumption of Anaheim Convention Center events today and the April 30 reopening of the Disneyland Resort.

We’re all glad to have these fun things back. But it’s much more than that. These venues support tens of thousands of jobs and small businesses and millions in city revenue that we use to serve residents.

Vaccines, along with common sense public health measures, are the best way to keep Anaheim going on reopening and economic recovery.

So sign up for your shot today if you haven’t already. Visit Othena.com or check your local pharmacy or doctor's office. They're even offering vaccines at Costco now.

If you’ve already been vaccinated, thank you! We encourage you to help however you can to get your loved ones and neighborhood vaccinated.
