Drive for a Cause, a Great Success!
Wow! This July, our friends at Haselwood Auto Group raised $78,701 during their annual Drive for a Cause benefitting KHS!
Not only did Haselwood donate $20 for every vehicle purchase and $5 for every service repair order all month long, but 19 pets found their forever homes during our special adoption event held at West Hills Kia.
We couldn't be more thankful for the generous support of our friends at Haselwood Auto Group and we look forward to using these funds to help even more pets in need! Thank you, Haselwood Auto Group, and our community for your continued support!

Kyna's Happy Tail
Long-time Kitsap Humane Society supporter Denis Powers has found joy in providing his rescue dogs with the most adventurous and relaxing life he could. You may remember him as the adopter of KHS Alumn, Bindi, who had quite a wonderful life. Over the years, Denis has also adopted three cats from KHS as well as his dogs Spencer, Baily, and Kyna.
While perusing our Pet of the Week, Denis spotted Kyna, then named Lucile, and immediately fell in love with her. The next day he was waiting at KHS when the doors opened. He knew he would be taking Kyna home with him and on February 5, 2015, Denis found a perfect fit for his family in Kyna. He lovingly calls her his “Shining Star” and shared 7 years of adoration with Kyna.

Kitsap Humane Society Joins Share the Care Campaign
|
|
We’re seeing it here, especially in the last few months, and across the country — record numbers of pets in need. To tackle the problem, Kitsap Humane Society is proud to join animal welfare advocates, shelters, and rescues nationwide in launching Share the Care, a new campaign highlighting the powerful impact people can have on animals in their community.
How can you support Share the Care?
-
Adopt: You gain a new family member and open up space and resources to support the next pet in need.
-
Today through Sunday, October 9, all adult cat adoption fees are $25 during the Bissell Pet Foundation Empty the Shelters event!
-
On Saturday, October 8 from 10 am - 2 pm, we'll have puppies and kittens available for adoption at the Gig Harbor Wilco!
-
And on Saturday, October 29 from 10 am - 2 pm, we'll have adorable adoptables at our Subaru Loves Pets Adoption Event at Peninsula Subaru!
-
Foster: Spending time in a shelter can be very stressful for pets. As a foster, you provide a safe and comfortable home for a pet while they prepare for the next step in their journey.
-
Donate: Your financial support has an immediate impact on shelter pets, providing each a second chance via medical treatments, enrichment, food, and general care when and where it is needed.
-
Advocate on social media: “Adopt” a shelter like Kitsap Humane Society and share our social media posts with your personal network. You’ll be giving the pets in our care greater exposure and helping them find loving families. Check us out on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok.
-
Volunteer: See what volunteer opportunities are available at Kitsap Humane Society and join our lifesaving team of volunteers!
Even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big impact.

Volunteer Spotlight
Meet Kristina Colbun!
|
Kristina Colbun discovered what it means to be a kitten foster by following the stories of a Seattle-area foster parent on Instagram. She knew right away that this was something she wanted to do herself so she reached out to KHS and started learning more about fostering from another KHS foster, Liz Thayer. Kristina officially kicked off her KHS foster career with a very special mother and son adult cat duo who were in our care through our Pet Protection Program.
“She lavished these two with attention, even while she was pining away for her first set of kitten fosters,” said KHS Foster Lead, Gina. “Kristina has since become a mom and babies professional, making great use of her dedicated foster room to comfortably house complete feline families.”
Before her foster journey began, Kristina knew that she wanted to add a few feline friends to her own family and while fostering allowed her to do so temporarily, she soon found what she was looking for in two of her fosters, EVA and her daughter Bessie. These two wonderful kitties are so lucky to have been adopted by such a loving forever family!
“Kitten season came just as we were ready to reunite my first fosters with their family,” said Kristina.“Mama Bluegrass and her little Garden Kittens were next, followed by Cookie and her Divas. Currently, I also have my first two bottle babies (now weaned) who will be with me for another 4-5 weeks as they cruise on up to 2lbs.
"KHS has been a wonderful rescue to work with. Gina and Holly (foster staff) have been an awesome support line along with the community of fosters I am a part of.”
|
|
While Kristina loves being a part of these little one’s lives, she says that she is not tempted to foster-fail them all, “At the end of 8-9 weeks of keeping up with this many kittens you are happy to see them go on to their forever homes! Bring on the next group!” said Kristina.
Kristina comes from a very technical background, and this comes out strongly in her fostering via her detailed data collection and weight charting. We love to see it! Kristina has been great to work with and we love that she's always gathering more info and tips and tricks for doing more and better with each new set of fosters. We are so grateful to have her as a part of our team!

Staff Spotlight
Meet Angelina Gallegos!
|
This month, give tail wags and mews to Angelina! Angelina has held many different roles during her time here at KHS, and currently serves as our Customer Service and Licensing Specialist.
Coming aboard in 2014 as a staff member but previously volunteering at the shelter, Angelina is passionate about pets and helping the community! Her favorite thing?
"There are two things which are my favorite. One is when I can make a difference in someone's life. Recently, I was able to reunite Abby, a lost dog in our care, and Trevor. It was scary and emotional for Trevor to come in and reclaim a dog he had not seen for four years. I was able to talk to him on the phone and provide him with some comfort and guidance. When he showed up, our conversation continued, and I just listened. He said, "If it were not for you and our talk, I would have surrendered her." Moments like this make me feel I have done well for someone and their pet.
The second thing is my friendships and connections with customers, volunteers, and staff members. I have made so many great friends in the community, have made long-lasting bonds with volunteers who have been part of KHS way before I started, and the staff members who have become my family. These things make my heart happy, along with sloppy dog kisses and kitten biscuits."
|
|
Along with many of our team members, Angelina has taken her work home with her and currently has five pets, three from KHS. Pictured with Angelina is her "soulmate dog," Alex, whom she adopted from KHS in January 2002. He passed away a few weeks after the photo was taken.
Angelina's manager shares, "Angelina is a huge asset to KHS and all our customers. She consistently goes above and beyond to help our customers and pets with compassion and empathy. Not only is Angelina wonderful to our clients and animals, but she is a joy to work with. She brings a sense of humor and a team player mentality with her to work every day. I love Angelina!"
Thank you for all you do and bring to KHS, Angelina!

Puppuccino Pal Partner
Gig Harbor Canine Cottage
|
|
It is our pleasure to introduce our October Puppuccino Pal Sponsor, Gig Harbor Canine Cottage! Gig Harbor Canine Cottage is a local business that provides small-scale dog boarding with a calm, quiet, and stress-free environment. Canine guests can expect fluffy blankets, classical and calming music, 60 minutes of personalized exercise each day, and a variety of other services!
“Dogs play such a pivotal role in our lives and give us so much joy, compassion, and friendship so, more than booking out our cottage, we are here to support the community and their pets,” said Gig Harbor Canine Cottage owner, Tracey Jones. “Not all dogs are a good match for our cottage, but we're always more than happy to schedule a meet-and-greet for potential clients to see our location and ask us any questions they may have. The goal is not only for the dog to be happy and comfortable during their time with us but for the client to be as well! We, as a family, are so particular with whom we board our family dogs with, we would expect nothing less from our potential clients!”
When asked why they chose to support KHS as a Puppuccino Pal Sponsor, Tracey said, “ I grew up with rescue dogs and cats playing a huge part in my family! I have always had a heart for caring for rescues in any way possible so, although I would LOVE to foster one day, the Puppuccino Pal Sponsorship is such an awesome opportunity to financially partner with KHS when I may not have the time to fill a volunteer position or foster an animal.”
