Greetings Osprey Community,
First order of business: we're thrilled to announce that Student Support Coordinator, Arava Geva, and her husband,
Mountain Middle School 7th grade Humanities teacher Nick Philliou, welcomed baby Jack to the world this week. Mom and baby are home, healthy and happy and newest little Osprey is super cute.
Many thanks to our families for making the time for
Student-Led Conferences this week. We hope these mid-semester check-ins were valuable for all involved. A special thank you to Osprey parents, led by Ceci McQuinn and Lucy Bryson, who organized the delicious soup and salad dinner for our teachers that evening!

Sean (front row, far left) and his HTH cohort serving food to those in need through Urban Angels in San Diego
|
Sean is in San Diego this week for a three-day school leadership retreat with his cohort from
High Tech High Graduate School of Education, reconnecting with his colleagues who are in school leadership roles across the country. While back at High Tech High Chula Vista--where he did his residency last year, and where both Aliza Cruz and Kyle Edmondson taught, too--Sean is gathering resources and inspiration to bring back to Animas.
Tune in to KUIP/ESPN 97.3FM and 930AM Saturday morning to catch
LINK program coordinator Janae Hunderman and our students! They recorded a 30 minute interview earlier this week about the benefits of our student internship program.

Registrar and Site Manager Laurel Rodd in her new space
|
Next Monday, students begin new Exploratory and XBlock classes, as we launch into the 2nd quarter. Kudos to Laurel Rodd for getting students into their new classes, in her
new role as Registrar and Site Manager. Please reach Laurel at registrar@animashighschool.com or extension 2307. You can find Laurel in the Main Office area, where she is now sharing an office with Christine Imming, our Director of Finance and HR.
Please use mainoffice@animashighschool.com for attendance and general questions, just as you always have. Karen Gerst is staffing our front desk for the time being, and we expect an announcement is coming soon about a more permanent Main Office Assistant.

seniors Phillip Wiley and Dawson Zick with a truck full of pumpkins, ready to be chucked by trebuchets the Advanced Physics students are building--stay tuned for Exhibition details! |
There are two opportunities to view student work at
Exhibitions next week. Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00, Ally Johnson's sophomores will present an authors' reading at the Steaming Bean, sharing excerpts from historical fiction they've written as part of their study of imperialism in Africa. Thursday, Sara Price's 9th graders will exhibit handcrafted masks and personal essays that explore how social forces have shaped their identities. That Exhibition is from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Durango Public Library.
Please note: Matt Dooley's 9th grade Humanities Exhibition has been moved to Wednesday, November 4.
Hopefully you saw the article in the Durango Herald about our upcoming election for a Parent-Elected Director for the AHS Board. Student Advisory Council president Lyle Bryson is excited about opportunity for the election to be student-run; StAC members will work with County Clerk Tiffany Parker to learn the ins and outs of the process, and ballots will be sent home on November 13. Deadline for applicants who are interested in joining the Board are due November 2. We are seeking applicants who have financial, real estate and fundraising experience; applicants need not be an AHS parent. For more information about the election, read this letter from the Board, which was sent to Osprey families, or contact board@animashigschool.com.
In addition to their work running the Board election, StAC is sponsoring Spirit Week activities next week. Read on for more details about the festivities. As a reminder, we have a four-day week next week, with Professional Development activities for our staff on Friday.
Thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!

Creepy, Comfy, and Crazy: Animas High Spirit Week 2015
by Lyle Bryson
The Animas High School Student Advisory Council will be putting on the first spirit week of the school year from October 26 through October 29. This week will be a time to embrace school spirit and what makes Ospreys unique. And different from years past, this year StAC will be hosting a variety of activities on each day of the week during lunch to maximize the spirit stoke. Take a look at the themes and activities listed below, and get ready to get your spirit on!
Monday: PJ Day (Back by popular demand) This year for Pajama Day, we will be hosting a movie showing of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" during lunch in the Commons. There will be couches, concessions, and more for anyone interested in coming by and watching the movie. All proceeds for concessions will go to StAC's efforts to fundraise for further school/cultural needs.
Tuesday: Twin Day
Have a friend you've always wanted to be your twin but never had the chance to act on it? Here's your chance! Grab a friend (or mentee/mentor) and dress as similarly as possible! During lunch all senior mentors and freshpeople mentees will meet in the commons (hopefully dressed as twins!) to join together for a lunch where they will discuss how their year is going and spend some quality one-on-one time together.
Wednesday: Tacky Safari Day This is the time to bust out your best tourist/animal outfits! On this day, all 9th-10th Grade students will dress as the "tourists", and all of the 11th-12th Grade students will dress as the "animals". During lunch there will be a scavenger hunt, which will lead students to different classrooms throughout the two AHS buildings. In each classroom will be a different habitat or famous landmark, which each animal or tourist will need to take a photo in front of in order to complete the scavenger hunt. Spoiler alert: there is a special prize for the winner (or winning group) of the scavenger hunt! If you are interested in participating in the scavenger hunt, meet StAC Representatives in the parking lot between the two buildings during lunch on Wednesday (location may change depending on weather).
Thursday: Costume Day And to top it all off, we'll end the week with Costume Day. Bring out your best costumes on this day, because at lunch we're going to have a costume fashion show! Come to the Commons, where you'll strut your stuff in front of special judges, and show the crowd why they should cheer for you to be the best costume of them all. Spoiler alert again: more prizes for the winners of the fashion show!
Friday: No School!

Folktale Fun
by Hannah Langford
|
senior Lyle Bryson's folktale
|
Crystal's Spanish 3 class recently exhibited their project on folktales. Through this project, they were asked to choose a traditional Spanish folktale, interpret it, create their own version of it, and then present their new creation. This project mimics how folktales progress throughout history, and, since it's mainly a verbal communication, shows why these tales commonly change between people and eras.
Students presented their folktales in a variety of unique ways, including one-man plays, animations, flip-books, and songs. Although these projects have already been exhibited, the final step to completion is telling the folktale to a native Spanish speaker in Durango and hearing of one of the folktales that they grew up with.

Calculus Class Creates Trig Toys
by Katie Austin
|
seniors Tristan Gavreau, Magic Nick and Katie Austin with their trig toy, "Circles are Triangles...Trust Us!"
|
Kyle Edmonson's calculus class has taken it upon themselves to create a selection of "trig toys." These toys are interactive models of various trigonometric functions, such as explaining the unit circle or sine and cosine waves. Though there is not yet a specific date set for an exhibition, the projects will be installed throughout the school and will be in place sometime next week. Students are encouraged to experiment with and learn more about the toys around the campus.

LINK Scholarships
We are excited to announce that two juniors have been selected to receive funding from the brand new LINK Scholarship Fund. Ellis McNichol will receive $500 to support her dream of traveling to Ghana to work with orphans and create positive change through writing about the children she'll meet. Annie Wyrick will also receive $500 to support in her efforts of interning at an observatory or planetarium. Senior Bryce Ward advocated for the creation of the LINK scholarship to support students, like her, who want to travel for their internships. She was instrumental in bringing the dream to reality.

We'd like to graciously thank community member Julie Levy Duvall for funding the first two students. Please contact Development Director Ashley Hein if you are interested in sponsoring the LINK Scholarship Fund!
