NEWS FROM THE NEST
May 28, 2015
Greetings Osprey Community,

As the 2015-16 school year draws to a close, we are extremely grateful for all the dedicated students, families, teachers, staff, board members and community supporters who have helped us provide young people with educational opportunities that can be truly transformative.  The AHS Class of 2015 has achieved 100% acceptance into college and earned approximately 3.5 million in scholarship dollars.  Our rising sophomores, juniors and seniors have successfully completed tPOLs, sharing with us poignant reflections on the value of their Animas education, and we are excited to welcome the Class of 2019 in August.  Animas High School is thriving, manifesting the vision our founders had into a reality that changes lives.

Summer Activities and Events
While we'll all take some time away from the Nest over the summer, we'll still be in touch; look for our newsletter to come out every few weeks, and stay tuned for information about Summer Osprey Events for students and families in July and August.  Possible gatherings include an Animas River trip, a family barbecue, hiking Animas Mountain, a campus beautification day and more.  If you would like to help us with these events or have other ideas, please contact Development Director Ashley Hein.  Summer Osprey Events are a great opportunity for new families to meet current students and families, as well as alumni, and we look forward to connecting over the summer months.

Report cards will be mailed out next week, and rising juniors and seniors will receive emails from Registrar Maureen Truax by the end of June to help determine class schedules for next academic year.  We will assign courses to 9th and 10th graders during Student Orientation; please look for a letter coming your way in August that will outline the curricular choices available in the 9th and 10th grades.  If you have questions over the summer, Laurel Rodd will staff the Main Office on Monday and Wednesday mornings, and Head of School Sean Woytek and Assistant Head of School Libby Cowles will both be available as well.

Finally, please take the opportunity to share your love and appreciation for outgoing Head of School Jake Lauer by Monday, June 1st.  We are putting together a book for him, and you can contribute by emailing jakeappreciations@animashighschool.com or stopping by to sign in person before 1:00 on Monday.   We are deeply grateful to Jake for his extraordinary dedication to AHS since its very inception and he will be sorely missed.

We hope you all have a restful, safe, fun summer and, as always, thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!

Osprey Appreciations

Thanks to Animas Surgical Hospital and Animas Orthopedic Associates for inviting our Ospreys to a hands-on look at robotic technology in the operating suite with Dr. Hammond last week.  What a cool opportunity to connect classroom learning with leading experts in our community!

Thanks, also, to all of the parent volunteers who helped make Senior Supper and Graduation really fabulous celebrations last week.  We could not have done it without Kathy Setka, Cate Smock, Jesse Hutt, Cathy Eagan and Kathleen McInnis!

We are also grateful for support we received from the  Coutts & Clark Foundation that allowed Biology teacher Colleen Dunning to do a honey bee project with her sophomores this spring.  While Colleen won't be teaching at Animas next year, she's promised us that she will stay on as the resident beekeeper, and we couldn't be happier that we aren't losing her completely!
