Noah Hotchkiss and Annie Wyrick, AHS class of 2017, celebrate graduation with faculty members Jessica McCallum and Roxy McKnight
Greetings Ospreys,

Transitional Presentations of Learning are complete, and the 2016-17 school year has officially drawn to a close.  We are grateful to all our families for entrusting us with the honor of working with your children and we are proud of our students and staff for all of the dedication to learning and growth we've seen this year.  The class of 2017 has joined the elite ranks of AHS Alumni and we have faith in their ability to head out into the world to create positive change.  As Lori Fisher put it in her tribute to them at graduation last week,  "These students KNEW what they wanted to do, and went after those goals with vigor and energy.  We hope, as we launch them into the world, that they can keep their strong sense of idiosyncrasy and singularity.  We need individuals in this world who set their own course, and this class is full of those." Remember to order graduation photos from Karen Skelly, our photographer. She has extended early bird pricing to June 10. To order, go to her website here, enter password "ahs" and click "send."  On the next page, click on "AHS Graduation" to view the photos.  All of the information about and instructions for ordering photos are listed on the first page. We wish the class of 2017 the very best and look forward to hearing about their successes in college, career and post-secondary life!

Calvin Chase, class of 2020, completes his first TPOL
This spring we hit a new milestone, with many of our first graduates graduating from college.  Congratulations to all those graduates, too!  Isabelle Tonso reached out to us recently to share her perspective, as a member of the class of 2013 who has recently returned to college after time raising her daughter while working in a nursing home and a preschool.  Isabelle reports, " What Animas high school taught me, stuck with me. I recently had to do a group project for my history class and I was really proud of the outcome. I remembered working with students at Animas and how upset I would get, how I couldn't handle my anger or express myself. I know I'm older now too but I really think I was remembering how to be an Osprey. I found myself offering different ideas and solutions, problem solving. Hearing out the ideas of others. All of this seems so obvious, it's what decent people do, but the teachers at Animas High School taught me this." Teaching students to be "decent people," as well as effective collaborators, critical thinkers and engaged citizens is our work, and we're proud to be part of the journey to adulthood for our students.

For our most recent alumni, the class of 2017, final transcripts will be sent automatically to their college of choice, provided students have entered that information in their Naviance accounts.  Final grades for the semester for all students have been posted in Infinite Campus.  We do not send out report cards; to view grades, login to IC, go to the Reports tab and then click on "Animas High School Report Card" to view.

The AHS main office will be open in June two days a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 to 3:00.  We will be closed for the month of July, and will open the main office once again on Tuesdays and Thursdays the first week in August.  Staff orientation begins August 9 as we welcome our four newest staff members: Shane Nelson (sophomore Humanities), Kat Jackson (Spanish), Summer Sanford (Biology) and Erin Skyles (Student Support and Wellness Counselor).  Read more about our latest hires, Summer and Erin, below.

We hope that you enjoy your summer and we look forward to welcoming students back to the Nest on Monday, August 21.   Thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!

Welcome Summer and Erin!

We are excited to welcome Summer Sanford to our faculty for the 2017-18 school year.  She will teach Biology as part of the sophomore team, with Tina Hott moving to the freshman team, teaching Physics.   Summer has been teaching in the Anthropology Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she will complete her Masters degree this summer. She graduated from Colorado State University in 2010 with a B.S. in Zoology and a minor in Anthropology, and she has served as a research assistant in Costa Rica, collecting and curating behavioral and hormonal data from white-faced capuchins. We look forward to Summer sharing her enthusiastic love of science with our students!

We also look forward to welcoming Erin Skyles to our staff, in the position of Student Support and Wellness Counselor. Erin is a licensed clinical social worker and therapist with extensive experience supporting youth and families from varying backgrounds who has lived in Durango for eighteen years. She works from a strength-based, supportive perspective with unique knowledge and experience around LGBTQ issues, bullying, substance use/abuse, trauma, self-esteem, healthy relationships, crisis mitigation, family issues, poverty, juvenile justice and more. We know that our students will appreciate her positive energy and compassionate nature and we are excited to welcome her to AHS.
