NEWS FROM THE NEST

Greetings Osprey Community,

We hope to see you this evening at Senior Project Exhibition from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Powerhouse Science Center. This culminating event gives our community the chance to learn how seniors have wrapped up their capstone projects by turning research into practice through take action projects that have included facilitating a workshop for our staff about how to best support American Indian students, hosting a fundraiser for a local wilderness therapy organization, pitching cryptocurrency investment strategies to a major Wall Street firm and much more.

While you're downtown for Senior Project Exhibition, swing by lively (a boutique) at 809 Main between 5:30 and 7:30 for A Lively Event to Support Animas High School, organized by junior Faith Mewmaw as part of her LINK Internship. Lively will donate 15% of all sales to the school; stop by for appetizers, refreshments and great local shopping. Juniors return from LINK next Monday and we are excited to welcome them back to the Nest with a pancake breakfast. We could still use a couple of parent volunteers to flip flap jacks, bring butter and syrup and lend griddles; please sign up here if you can help.

Next week, ninth through eleventh grade students will prepare for Transitional Presentations of Learning with their core teachers Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. TPOLs are the following week, May 29 through 31 and are individually scheduled. Please be sure students are in professional dress for TPOLs; they will be asked to redo them if they do not arrive appropriately attired.

Next Thursday Advisory Olympics take place from 8:25 to 12:30 at Buckley Park. All students are expected to attend this end-of-year celebration where advisory groups compete in a range of fun activities. AHS campus will be closed on Thursday and we will not have the Hub Bus or catered lunch that day. Students should plan to go directly to Buckley Park in the morning and they will be released from Buckley at 12:30.

Friday is also a half day next week; seniors will be at the Community Concert Hall for their class photo in cap and gown and a dress rehearsal at 8:25, while all other students are on campus for LINK Panels, where juniors will share their internship experiences with younger Ospreys. Parents are welcome to attend LINK Panels, which run from 8:45 to 10:00. We will all gather one last time for the final All School Meeting that morning at 11:00 before a 12:30 release. Catered lunch will be available on Friday and the Hub Bus will  run between DHS and AHS.

Next week we celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of 2018 and send them off into the world. Seniors will come to school on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday for individually scheduled Senior Exit Interviews with Kye, Lori and Kurt. Senior Celebration is Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:00 at the Rocket Grill at the Fort Lewis College Student Union. All are welcome for this annual event, which is designed to provide students and families an opportunity to thank our community for the support they've shown along the high school journey. Please join us for light appetizers and a cash bar. We will distribute reserved tickets and caps and gowns to seniors at this event, and unveil the 2018 AHS Senior Celebration Booklet.

Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00, all staff and seniors will gather for Senior Supper in the AHS Commons. Many thanks to all who have already signed up to help decorate, set up and cook; there are still a few unclaimed opportunities to pitch in--sign up here to help make this event special for our graduates

outgoing AHS Board President Ann Laffaye
The AHS Class of 2018 Graduation is Friday, May 25 at 4:00 at the Community Concert Hall. Families of seniors will have reserved tickets and there will be general admission seating available at the door. Please arrive by 3:45 to be seated in time for the ceremony. We look forward to sharing this special day with our sixth graduating class and our community!

Finally, we would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Ann Laffaye, whose sons Mark and Todd will graduate from AHS next Friday. Ann has served on the AHS Board of Directors since the fall of 2013, most recently as President. We will miss razor-sharp business acumen, her ability to run a meeting like nobody else, her grounding sense of humor and her deep commitment to the success of our school. Many thanks to Jeff King for stepping into the role of Board President. We are seeking a new Board Member with expertise in finance; please reach out to [email protected] if you have suggestions of a candidate or questions about the position.

Enjoy the weekend and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!
