NEWS FROM THE NEST

students in Ashley Carruth's Leadership elective engaged an activity with Outward Bound educator Cathy Cowles
Greetings Osprey Community,

Many thanks to all who attended Parent Orientation this week.  It was great to reconnect with returning families and welcome new ones to the Nest as well!

Please remember that there is no school next Monday, as our staff will be engaging in professional development work.

Next week, all students will have their school photos taken either on Wednesday (11th and 12th grade) or Thursday (9th and 10th grade), during Humanities classes. This year, we have chosen not to use an outside photographer; senior Alex Bielenda will take the photos, using the professional skills she developed last year during her LINK Internship with Allison Ragsdale.  School photos are used in the AHS Yearbook, in Infinite Campus and on AHS Student ID Cards, which we create and distribute free of charge.  Families who would like to get prints of their student's school photo can reach out to our technology guru, Dusty Grannis, to receive the electronic file; contact Dusty at [email protected].  There are many online options for printing photos; one we recommend is mpix.com

Rotary Exchange students Katherine and Akos enjoy the scene at Purgatory with junior Aidyn Hankins
We are enjoying having two Rotary Youth Exchange students with us at AHS this year.  Juniors Katherine from Denmark and Akos from Hungary are diving right into our Osprey community and we appreciate the global perspective they add to the mix.  Several Ospreys are away on Rotary Exchange this year, as well, including Sadie (Italy), TJ (Romania), Garnet (Sweden), Nat (Lithuania), Ella (Zimbabwe), Brianna (Brazil) and Trinity (France).  Follow their adventures on our local Rotary district's Facebook page, where Ella just shared her perspective about experiencing a culture so different from her own.  To learn more about Rotary Exchange visit here or contact Tami Duke at [email protected].  Applications for the 2018-19 school year are due September 30.

Looking for a concrete way to make a difference in the lives of those in Texas impacted by Huricane Henry? Freshman Kian Edmondson has been compelled to respond to the devastation in Henry's path by organizing a diaper drive for AHS.  There is a collection box in the main office and we encourage all Ospreys to bring diapers (particularly larger sizes), wipes, diaper cream, baby formula and/or adult incontinent items to campus next week.  Kian will mail all donations to the Texas Diaper Bank next weekend.  Read more about what items are most needed and how the Diaper Bank distributes them here.  We'd love to see our community make a significant difference in the lives of those impacted.  Please help out with a donation.  Thanks to Kian for modeling service to others in this way.

Finally, please mark your calendar for the AHS Back to School Social on Saturday, September 16 from 4:00 to 6:00 in the Rochester Hotel's Secret Garden.  Sean will deliver his annual State of the School address, and we will have live music from talented students plus light refreshments.  This is a great opportunity to mix and mingle with Osprey families and friends in a fun, social setting right next to the Durango Autumn Arts Festival.

We hope that you enjoy yet another long weekend and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!

College Corner

Our college counselor, Jess Adams, is in Boston attending the annual conference for the National Association of College Admission Counseling.  While there, she will tour several colleges.  This professional development work helps Jess help our Ospreys as she guides them through the process of identifying colleges that will be the best fit for their interests and passions.

Throughout the year, we invite admissions representatives from colleges and universities to visit with interested students during the school day.  Students are encouraged to meet college reps, ask good questions and wow them with their mature, professional behavior.  The following schools are sending reps our way next week:

Tuesday, September 12th
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University: 11:00-12:00pm in Susy's Room
Northern Arizona University: 11:30-12:00pm in Kyle's Room
Colorado Christian College:12:00-12:30pm in Jess' Office

Wednesday, September 13th
Colorado State University- 11:00-11:30 in Britt's Room

There are two college fairs coming up as well, and students are encouraged to attend as these can be a great way to learn about many colleges at once.  The  Colorado College Fair for Durango is next Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 at Durango High School, and the Colorado Western Slope College Fair is September 30 and October 1 in Aspen.
