9th graders exhibiting teamwork and trust on the high ropes course
Hello Osprey Community,

What a beautiful day the class of 2020 had this week for their field trip to AHS co-founder and parent Phil Bryson's ropes course!  In case you missed the front-page story and photos in the Durango Herald, have a look here, where you can also find great video footage from the 9th graders' adventurous day with On the Edge Productions.  We love how Annabelle Mick reflected on the value of the activities, saying "This will help me in high school to learn to take a leap of faith and to trust my surroundings and my peers."  Building strong relationships is key to our school culture and research tells us that supportive school environments promote academic success.  Many thanks to Phil and his son, Lyle--AHS class of 2016--for providing this opportunity for our students!

more team-building...on the ground
As a reminder, our staff will be engaged in professional development work on Monday of next week, and so there is no school for students.  Our teachers will use the time to continue building challenge and access for all students through excellent project design and classroom instruction.

Monday evening, the School Excellence Committee (SEC) will meet from 5:00 to 6:30 at AHS in Ashley Carruth's classroom.  The SEC is a working group of Board members, staff, parents and community members who cultivate, support and promote academic and cultural excellence for all students at AHS, and all meetings are open to the public.  Agendas and minutes are posted on the AHS website here.

The AHS Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) will hold their first meeting next Wednesday morning, 8:30 to 9:30 at the Smiley Cafe in the Smiley Building in downtown Durango.  PAC meetings are open to all families and will alternate between this time in the morning and evening meetings from 5:30 to 6:30 to accommodate different family schedules.  Next week's agenda will include updates and information from Sean Woytek and Ashley Hein about the mill levy, construction projects, fundraising, opportunities for involvement and the start of the year.

Thru the Lens will be back next Wednesday for make-up photos for anyone who missed picture day this week.

Wednesday evening the AHS Board of Directors will meet in Ashley's classroom from 5:30 to 7:30.  The Board is charged with ensuring that the school is fulfilling its mission and vision, supporting and evaluating the Head of School, monitoring and strengthening the school's programs and services, providing financial oversight, ensuring legal and ethical integrity of the organization and enhancing the school's public standing.  All Board meetings are open to the public, and agendas and minutes are posted on the AHS website here.

Looking ahead a bit, please mark your calendar for the AHS Back-to-School Social on Saturday, September 17 from 4:00 to 6:00 in the Rochester Hotel's Secret Garden. Sean will share his State of the School Address, highlighting areas of celebration for the school as well as goals for the year based upon feedback we receive from students, families and staff through annual surveys and ongoing dialogue. This will be a fun opportunity to gather and socialize with Animas families and staff, with light appetizers, live music and a cash bar. All ages welcome!

The AHS Mountain Biking Team is off to Colorado Mountain College in Leadville for their second race of the season tomorrow and we're wishing them all good luck.  Ride fast, Ospreys.

Enjoy the weekend and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!
