NEWS FROM THE NEST
February 9, 2018
Greetings Osprey Community,

We really appreciate all the community partners who supported our first ever Sophomore Inspire Week this week. Students in the class of 2020 worked alongside folks from The Boys & Girls Club of La Plata County, La Plata Youth Services, the Durango Public Library, Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County, United Way of Southwest Colorado and Durango Nature Studies, giving back to the community that supports our school in so many ways. We hope that the sophomores found the week to be valuable as they took time away from regular classes to engage fully in college and career preparation.

Four of our sophomores--Parker Smith, Cat Shirley, Ryan Glogowski and Raimy Sporl--will be on stage at the Durango Arts Center tomorrow evening, bravely sharing their personal stories alongside a handful of students from Southwest Open School at Talon Tales. The event grew out of a project last fall in Ally Johnson's Humanities class and we're grateful to Sarah Syverson and Tom Yoder of the Raven Narratives for working with our students to create this extraordinary opportunity to give voice to their experiences as young adults. We hope you'll turn out to support them!

We also hope you'll join Ally's sophomores for The Truth of War, their exhibition next Thursday evening from 5:00 to 8:00 in the AHS Commons, where they will immerse us in the Vietnam War era, allowing participants to explore the controversial conflict and its lasting impact from diverse perspectives. Students have used a variety of sources to understand the issue, including the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, the Pentagon Papers and other primary sources, interviews with local veterans and Ken Burns' documentary series The Vietnam War

There are several meeting next week, all open to anyone who would like to attend. Our School Excellence Committee meets Monday from 4:30 to 6:00, the Health and Wellness Committee meets Monday from 5:30 to 6:30, and the AHS Board of Directors meets Tuesday, 5:30 to 7:30. All meetings are on campus.

Seniors and their parents are encouraged to join college counselor Jess Adams Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 in the Commons for Senior College Night: Understanding Financial Aid and Scholarships. Jess will help families navigate the process of paying for college. Please bring any financial aid award letters you have received.

We will be visiting Miller and Escalante Middle Schools next week to meet with their 8th grade students and share information about enrollment for the 2018-19 school year. New families must complete the online Intent to Enroll form by February 28 to be placed in the enrollment lottery. Siblings of current students or alumni are guaranteed a spot as long as they complete Intent to Enroll by February 28 and complete registration materials by March 15. Returning students will receive registration materials on March 1, and must complete and return them by March 15 in order to claim their spot for the 2018-19 school year.

Enjoy the weekend and thanks for all you do to help the Ospreys soar!
